Fuel octane question
If an engine is designed to burn 87 octane fuel and you put in 91 octane, is it going to cause any problems in the long run? Or would 89 octane be fine?
Any info is greatly appreciated!

A higher octane rating than necesary won't hurt or help your engine, it'll only cost more. Use the lowest octane rating that your engine runs well with.

91-89 is fine.
now if you put 100+ it would drop performance(hp) cause it would take longer to ignite that fuel.

I could go into more engine theory than youd probably be able to handle, but like the other guys said, yes, 91 octane won't hurt the engine - just your pocketbook. You won't get any boost from a car designed to run 87 if you run 89 or 91 - so just dump in the 87 and happy motoring!

If you advance your timing, you will gain the benefits of the higher octance, it gives it a longer time to burn.

lol, my engine(toyota 4k) is design to run under octane 89, and the lowest octane i can get here is 93 at Shell station, and i'm using Petronas, who only provides 97 octane fuel... oh well.. so much of getting the lowest octane fuel design for the car...
anybody know how much compresion ratio can octane 97 fuel handles? i'm just planing to swap a 4ag and i'm wondering with 97 octane fuel what compresion ratio can i reach... is 11.8:11 okay?

not completely sure, but it should be, you can play with the timing too just in case.
i hear they sell that 97 octane for 25 cents a gallon in Qatar. Man i need someone to sent me a barrel now and then.

97 octane fuel is "standard issue" here lolz. Its premium fuel that is available at any station in malaysia. The 93 octane regular fuel is about to be obsoletted because its kinda leaded or something.
its 1.36 ringgit per litter here, but i heard the price had raised 5 cent per liter, so it would be 1.41 ringgit. so, if counted in us$ and us gallon, it would be US dollar 1.41 per gallon.. i hope my calculation is correct

It's because it's twice as much here in the U.S. for a gal. of gas and we don't get 97 octanes

yeh, we gotta run to the nearest racetrack that carries 95+
.my guess is that you can run 97 octane on 11:8 compression, but put 100 if ya can just to be safe.
