Petrol engine more polluting as Diesel !

by Olof van Joolen and Erik Kouwenhoven

The latest generation of direct injected petrol engines is a danger to the health.

they produce more fine substances than modern diesel engines without filter and because the particles are smaller as dieselparticles, they do more damage to your body.

this says universitarian chiefteacher and exhaustgas expert Michiel Makkee, from the TU Delft.the Dutchman that was on the roots of the particle filter for Dieselengines, bases on research done by David Kittelson for the American Ministry of Energy.his conclusions are that directly injected petrol engines not only emit more, but also smaller - 20 to 80 nanometer- particles.

the tiny fumagine particles can penetrate deeper in organs like lungs.research from the WHO shows that this is extremely damaging.according to the "Nederlandse Milieu en Natuur Planbureau " between 2300-3500 people die too soon each year, in our country alone.

In a "normal" petrol engine a fine mixture of petrol/air is injected right in front of the inlet valve of the combustion chamber. With direct injection only air is sucked in using the inletvalve.the petrol is sprayed into the combustion chamber diectly. This save 10-15% of petrol in theory.in real life this often is less.

Other as with Diesel engines there is no limit for petrol engines o emit fine substances. Alfa romeo,BMW and the brands of the Volkswagen-Audi Group deliver vehicles with direct injection. The most other Europaen brands are currently developing it.

BMW says that this technology will be found in all their products, in time.according to a spokesman the theme of fine substances does not play a role while developing a new engine. This is the same for most other brands.According to Siemens VDO the technology will be found on 1 out of three vehicles in europe in the next three years.

The Dutch Ministry of VROm doesn't see the emission of fine substances by petrol engines as a problem.Acccording to VROM there are only a few vehicles with this technology on the road, and the emission will be strongly redced when the Euro-5 demands step into action.then Petrol engines may emit the same amount of fine substances as diesel engines do.the im is to start the Euro-5 demsands in 2010.

Milieudefensie (=enviramentalists) finds that also these petrol engines should have a particle filter."We find that you should look beyond Diesels only, and you should use all possible methods to reduce the emission of fine particles", according to spokesman Joris van Wijnhoven.

What are the odds of those petrol-engine fine particles from actually affecting one's health. I always take racing drivers from the past as an example: they were exposed to exhaust fumes from thirsty racing cars that drove on mixtures that would make any environmentalist's head spin around!!! Those who weren't killed during racing (not too many in fact) didn't all die of cancer, now did they

That's an interesting article Drakkie

In light of how lethally toxic the dust & fibres from asbestos have proven to be (mesothelioma) I always cringed a bit from seeing those F1 pitcrews being enveloped in that thick dust cloud from the carbon brake pads, emitted during wheel changes

Hasn't diesel been significantly cleaner than petrol for a while now?
