Molt Taylor had a design for a flying car fully certified and ready to go into production in the 1950s. If he could've found enough potential buyers the "Aerocar" wouldn've gone into production. Sadly nobidy really wanted a flying car.
The technology for flying cars has been around a while, it's just a case of finding enough people who'd actually seriously want one, and who'd be willing to fork our the significant cash it would cost. Same with amphibious cars like the Gibbs Aquada, ventures like that are doomed to fail because the demand for curiosities like that just isn't there. ![]() ![]()

It doesn't work. Take a very small helicopter like a Robinson R22 - the rotor diameter is over 7.5m, it's still 3.8m if you fold the rotors. Hardly discreet or compact. And since you need to put the rotor over the centre of gravity of the vehicle, you're going to have a huge overhang. And of course an R22 only weighs 600kg, a decently sized car is going to be at least double that if not triple. A helicopter of that weight is typically over 10m long, that's the size of a bus, not a car. Not to mention the fact that they require 400 - 500hp. A 'copter of that size also typically costs $2.5million. Then you have the fact that helicopters are rather difficult to operate, and learning to operate one is very expensive. Maintainance and making sure that the vehicle is not going to drop out of the sky is also rather specialist knowledge. Hey, what the hell do I know? I'm sure in 10 years time we'll all have one. 1 year after that we'll all be dead, but at least it will have been a bit of a laugh. ![]()

The problem of making a flying car isn't a problem. It's integrating it into our everyday lives that's difficult. How do you keep a car flying at 200 MPH from flying into your house? You see what I mean?

yes it´s not exactly a car but should be as easy to use as one (thought for now very expensive!).

In future.
everybody will have own an helicopter or flying automobile.like how today everybody has car.Neither you belive or not. because.technology brings new things always.but humanbeing can not understand.eg cd,mobile telephon, computer etc. Could you thing these will be almost.maybe we thought many many years after will be.isn't it.but now we are using. Let's look technically. Which wehicle is trust? car? boat? plane?helicopter? Yes helicopter. Howmany crashes did you see helicopter crashes. but car everyday.plane everyday, boat every day sinking or bad weather condition like this or howmany crashes letaral helicopter crashes? which wehicle is usefull? which wehicle is fast? Which wehicle is independed? But today helicopters are very PRIMITIVE. automobile is firstly is social event. We can not forgive it. in future they will be mix. To drive it. it will be to drive very beatifull and maximum freedom. and our life will change slowly. And We will not understand like today that we cannot understand. |

it strikes me that a flying car would use up a lot more energy and be less efficient than a ground car - imagine the energy needed to lift 1.5 tonnes off the ground and propell it, as opposed to simply getting it rolling

http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=helicopter+crash That's just a simple search, providing plenty of results. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. The reason why most crashes occur is human error. Cars crash everyday because people are too inexperienced or aren't mentally ready to handle a car in the conditions they're driving in. Imagine what will happen when cars can fly, you've just given them a whole new dimension in which to crash, which they certainly will. |
