Exuast noise

Hey, I just turned 16 and bought a 1992 honda accord (manual baby). It's a great car but I'd like to make it a little more fun to drive (it's already pretty fun). I was thinking cutting off the muffler and leave it with straight pipes cuz I can't afford replacing them. The engine is only an inline-4 and I am wondering would removing the muffler make it too loud.

Yes, it will make it too loud. My "only a 1.275L inline-4" makes 105Db at 4,000rpm(3,000 more till redline) with a glasspack, highly illegal.

So instead you just want to "cut off the muffler"? What possible good with that do?

No it won't, and depending on where you live, it may be illegal. A while back, the exhaust on my '98 Civic disconnected and it sounded awful. I felt embarrassed to be driving a car that loud; it hurt to press the accelerator. All in all, I would consider it a stupid move. But that's just my opinion.

Keep the muffler on it, cutting it off will not only make it illegal and get you fined, but it will also make you look like a try-hard.

Instead of cutting the muffler and paying the $200 fine (or however much it is), wait until you have saved up the money for a quality exhaust system. Or even better, don't replace the muffler at all! Rather, save up your money until you have enough for a good car...

I'm not making fun of you or anything, my first car was a Peugeot 504, 0-100 in about 15 seconds. It used to get beaten at the traffic lights by the buses! But it was cheap and reliable, which is what you want.

Think of it this way... would you prefer to have your Accord with a sports exhaust and some wheels and stuff for your first car, and then the same kind of thing for your second car. Or would you prefer to have a stock Accord with no mods as your first car, and then a nicer (insert whatever car you like) car which looks/sounds/drives better before you do anything?

If you want to make sound nice and not annoy the neighbors or get in truble with the cops. Save up and get a good high flow muffler like a Magnaflow or Flowmaster. Magnaflow has deep sound while Flowmaster has a higher pitch. You say you're on a budget, but if you saved up for a car, you can save up for a good exuast.

My buddy has a 92 Accord with a Flowmaster 60 series. It cost him $45 and he has one of the deepest sounding Hondas I've ever heard. Save your money, do it right the first time.

Duh, everyone knows you can't drift if your car has a muffler. It throws the weight balance off.

Never mind all this embarrasment stuff - although it is highly rubbish to have a car that loud unless it has 6 or more cylinders and has the 'bite to match the bark'.

Fiddling with the exhaust on your car is a BAD idea - check out the pic attached. I know that's an F1 engine, but there's a very good reason for all those crazy bends. 'Back pressure' is very important to how your engine runs, the flow of gases is crucial to a motor functioning correctly, cutting the muffler out of your exhaust will mess it up big time... you'll get big f*ck off holes (or flat spots) in the power delivery and you'll go through fuel like you were driving a dragster.

The main point here is that it will make your car slower. Secondly it will be much less efficient.

All-in-all: bad idea.
