I had the same thing happen on my Clio. Turned out that my rims were bent caused by driving with tyres that didn't have enough pressure on them (thanks previous owner !). I had them rectified and away went the wobly sound.

The wheels do not fall off. The CV's are essentially the flex point in the drive shaft to allow the car to turn etc. When the joint fails, it would have to do one hell of a lot of damage to the surrounding componentry to make a wheel come off, as the stub axle etc is captive in a housing. The joint itself could turn to mush but its still retained in that housing. CV's usually click and rattle when they are stuffed anyway, I havent heard one thump before. Has anyone thought of ball joints?

Check that the tyres aren't rubbing on the plastic inner guards....they may have detached causing them to drop and rub on the tyres. Also, check for anything else in the wheel well which may be rubbing. Have the rims/tyres been changed recently....they may be rubbing on the struts or inner guards if they are the wrong width/diameter.
