I like the sound of a big V8 with a large cam and some good flowing exhaust.

Certainly the sound of brute power but hearing that just makes me think "No brains at all" kinda like when I hear harleys... It just sounds very unintelligent Ducati beats Harley every time.

Give me complicated sounds like from a BMW I6 or better yet a Ferrari V12 (Flat 12 too ). Give me DOHC, VTEC, MIVEC, Vanos, and Valvetronic!

I am also partial to turbocharged 4 cylinder engines.

Turbocharged 4 cylinders no thanks. I do like the sound of a 4 valve dohc mustang though. But a corvette with a big cam good flowing heads and good exhaust is crazy. I think when a engine has to large of a bore it doesnt sound good. Like 502's and such.

I have to agree with you, there's nothing quite like a V8. Some 4 pots do actually sound good. Cosworths, for example, particularly older ones, sound amazing. Flat 4s usually sound good, too. A lot of 4s sound terrible, though.

I love the creamy wuffle of a big American V8- something with a suitably lumpy idle, maybe a Dodge Charger R/T (1968) with huge cams.

I'm with jediali on the M3 noise, too. Sublime.
You are actually kidding me right..? The M3 engine sounds like a bag of rusty nails being thrown at a victorian blackboard and a window at idle...

The M3 sounds good. And that's the end.

It cannot beat the Audi 5-pot 2.2Turbo or the 2.7TT end of.

If you want a VAG engine that sounds good try the VR6 or the V8 from the S-series.

Oh god yes! the MK4 VR6, such a nice one flew by me the other day, Porshce engines are to die for too, the flat six in my neighbors 1994 993 Turbo is so loud and makes the windows rattle, even at about 2,000rpm, it's amazing.

Are you on drugs?

@ 2000 RPM a Porsche Turbo is rather quiet, even with a race exhaust, and definitely not to die for.

If an M3 rattles a lot at idle I needs to be looked at, normal cause of that is low oil pressure to the VANOS system, but at higher revs makes all those you have listed sound woeful, and rather muted.

No no no, no drugs,

I need to get a video of the 993T but my camera was smashed on Friday so I can't
I live in an area swamped with M3's and they all sound the same

You would expect every example of the same model car to sound different?
