"Aluminum, or aluminium if you prefer"

as in prefer to be RIGHT

Hopefully the wider spread use of it will educate the proper spelling/pronunciation.

I thought aluminium was just a form of pronunciation and alternative British spelling (i.e. vigor and vigour).

You are right, both ways to write it are correct.

Canada/USA: Aluminum
UK/Australia: Aluminium

I also always spelled it aluminium (there's only one way to write it in French ), but according to American/Canadian dictionaries it's currently officially spelled "aluminum". And yes Matra, the 'correct' way to write it changes often, so the way it's spelled in your dictionary depends on the year it was made I guess... as long as we understand I guess it's alright! Personally I believe aluminium is the only correct way to write it, even though dictionaries don't agree with that

I would like to apologize on behalf of America for spelling and pronouncing the word 'Aluminium' sans the I. Obviously, the impact it has caused on the global community is unparalleled by acts even as gruesome as genocide.

Respectfully yours,
U.S. Citizen

Given that the English were able to take the letters K N I G H and T and get the same pronunciation as the non-word "nite", I'm not sure they have any high ground in how things should be spelled or pronounced. Perhaps we should implement a democracy of spelling. Given that the US and Canada together form the largest block of native English language speakers, I would say the North American spellings and pronunciations certainly could be argued to be the correct ones based simply on number of speakers. Common usage is after all how words are given their meanings and spellings. Just ask those gay (happy) people.

Do you want to FIGHT over it ?
Using my SIGHT, there are many examples to see.
I may even have to take a FLIGHT over there to sort you out

Excellent, on that basis California should be speaking Spanish
Hundreds of millions of Indians speak and use the real English language

If it's wrong it's wrong
Man just read up on how Ellis Island officials decided the spelling of all those immigrants surnames

Sadly the language IS dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Wish you guys had a better education system to fix that

( Reality is of course that the English went through a loving the French period and changed the spelling of many words to look "more sophisticated" )
