Engine Bias Quiz

Here’s a little quiz to help you figure out if you have an engine bias:

1. Do you sleep better at night thinking the DB9 has a twin inline 6 under its hood?

2. Do you think an Aston Martin with a V8 should be the highest prices car in the line and cost more than the GDP of most countries?

3. Does Jaguars with anything other than inline 6 make you want to punch someone?

4. Is a Bentley with a W12 just a fancy Volkswagen?

5. When Lotus talks about a V6 do you cringe?

6. Do you wonder where the Audi inline 5 went?

7. Do you think anything other than an inline 4 or 6 in a BMW is simply a marketing ploy?

8. Does a 6+ litre Mercedes-Benz engine with twelve cylinders seem like four too many?

9. Does a Porsche with anything other than a horizontally opposed engine seem insulting to you?

10. Could you only accept a Ferrari V8 by thinking of it as two inline 4s sharing a crankshaft?

11. When you see a Gallardo owner do you offer to help him find his missing two cylinders?

12. When you see pictures of the Veyron’s engine do you feel the urge to sort the cylinders out into two nice neat lines of 8?

13. Do you refer to any American car made after 1948 with anything other than a V8 as "an abomination"?

If you said Yes to more than one of these you have an engine bias.

If you said Yes to all of these let me know next time you’re in town and I’ll buy you a beer.

i said yes a few times..

aston v12 may share some dessign issues with V6 but the crankshaft is very different.

1. Do you sleep better at night thinking the DB9 has a twin inline 6 under its hood? - NO

2. Do you think an Aston Martin with a V8 should be the highest prices car in the line and cost more than the GDP of most countries? -YES

3. Does Jaguars with anything other than inline 6 make you want to punch someone? -NO

4. Is a Bentley with a W12 just a fancy Volkswagen? - ABSOLUTELY YES

5. When Lotus talks about a V6 do you cringe? -YES

6. Do you wonder where the Audi inline 5 went? -NO, it went trough the radiator and grill for a start, but YES if i see/hear an original quattro

7. Do you think anything other than an inline 4 or 6 in a BMW is simply a marketing ploy? -YES

8. Does a 6+ litre Mercedes-Benz engine with twelve cylinders seem like four too many? -YES

9. Does a Porsche with anything other than a horizontally opposed engine seem insulting to you? - YES

10. Could you only accept a Ferrari V8 by thinking of it as two inline 4s sharing a crankshaft? -YES..thats an odd one, first thing that pops up in my head, big differences betweeen flat plane and crossplane crankshafts..same feeling about espirit V8 too.

11. When you see a Gallardo owner do you offer to help him find his missing two cylinders? -NO

12. When you see pictures of the Veyron’s engine do you feel the urge to sort the cylinders out into two nice neat lines of 8? -NO, i like VR6 layout so I love W16 layout

I said yes to 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

And I have some more. Ferraris should all V12 engines, nothing else will do. The plasticky looking HF V6 in recent Alfa Romeos is an insult to the brand. And in the Gallardo not only is it lacking 2 cylinders, but I don't want an Audi engine in my Lambo.

Those are all I could think of this morning.

I have a deep passion for the Ferrari inline 4s, 500TRC, 860 Monza, etc. I like to think of the V8 Ferraris as the descendants of those.

I still love the Gallardo, but the fact that four different Audis use it's V10, AND they get a smoother torquier version AND they get a turbo charged version AND soon they're going to have it in a mid-engine super car would really annoy me.

1. Can't say I do
2. No
3. Not really
4. Absolutely
5. Up to a point, yes
6. Now that you mention it...
7. No
8. No
9. It does actually
10. Err, no
11. No, but I'll offer to help steal the turbos from an RS6 that's somehow missing from his car...
12. Hehe, yes
13. Not necessarily "abomination". "Crap" comes to mind though.

I'll add a couple more:

14. Did you exclaim "What the f..." when Merc reduced the number of valves per cylinder in their engines from 4 to 3 in the late nineties?
15. Do you laugh when you hear a possible turbo 2.0 litre four is being planned for the new Camaro? And you're not sure if you're laughing because you find it funny or unbelievable?
16. Do you find the new generation of turbo engines from BMW insulting yet strangely fascinating at the same time?
17. Likewise, does the idea of a diesel engine in a supercar curl your mouth upwards on the one side and downwards on the other?

I respect them, but for me the Ferrari engine always will be the V12. Ferrari has made other (excellent) engines, but they will always be linked with the 12 cylinder, right from the 125 up to the latest 599. In my opinion the V8s are Dinos, not proper Ferraris.

In fact I'd even go further and say that proper Ferraris not only have V12 engines, but that they are placed in front not in the middle. Altough that's not what we are discussing here.

And regarding diesels in supercars/sportscars that's just wrong.

I don't think we should stick to Flintstone's leg-driven cars just because that was the original, although I admit that there are disgusting things out there. But what if a car would have 2000 hp out of a 1-cylinder 0.2 liter engine? Would you really mind the small engine size?

14. Did you exclaim "What the f..." when Merc reduced the number of valves per cylinder in their engines from 4 to 3 in the late nineties? - Oh lord yes. And going to SOHC? A disgrace.
15. Do you laugh when you hear a possible turbo 2.0 litre four is being planned for the new Camaro? And you're not sure if you're laughing because you find it funny or unbelievable? - I hate GM so much.
16. Do you find the new generation of turbo engines from BMW insulting yet strangely fascinating at the same time? - Actually just fascinating. I love the turbo six.
17. Likewise, does the idea of a diesel engine in a supercar curl your mouth upwards on the one side and downwards on the other? -For some reason on an Audi it seems okay. I feel dirty for saying that.

You're going to have a hard time finding someone who's more of a Ferrari purist than me and I'm okay with mid engine V12s; 250 LM, P cars, 512M. Now a mid engine flat 12 is something I'm slightly uncomfortable with.

You'll like this story: I was with my father once and we bumped into this woman who was an old friend of hers and she was excited because her husband just bought "the new Dino." Turned out it was a 360 Modena.

all of them were except the 308 GT4 (Bertone), which lost the Dino name sometime during its production.

6. Do you wonder where the Audi inline 5 went? I do

9. Does a Porsche with anything other than a horizontally opposed engine seem insulting to you? not insult but i do find it strange.

13. Do you refer to any American car made after 1948 with anything other than a V8 as "an abomination"? I like my v8s but I dont like them that much

If you said Yes to more than one of these you have an engine bias.
