easy way to get tar off a exhaust?
gday all,
ok, ive just brought a rolling shell(with all parts) to rebuild and was in the process of cleaning the muffler to see if i wanted to keep it and it turns out to be fully stainless steel so i will be keeping it, but its covered in tar, in a place where i cant easily get at it with a scowerer, is there a easy way to remove tar or is it just going to be elbow grease?cheers in advance, Ben |

Try soaking it in Goo Gone, WD-40, or any petroleum based product.

Gas works well.

gas works but you might want to consider aircraft remover... it's kinda like paint stripper on steroids but it'll take anything off. Not meant for cleaning and it causes cancer though.

I wouldn't use the stripper as the overspray will attack everything.

Use gel paint stripper, shouldnt discolor like gas sometimes does...

I've also used kerosene to remove undercoating(very similar to tar), that worked great. It's also fun to light it on fire

aircraft remover is a gel/paste type stripper - no overspray cause you brush it on and wipe off with a paper towel. Most likely cleaner and safer than flammable liquids

Brake fluid will break that tar down like a fraction, then you can scrape and rinse it off.

The only problem with that aircraft stripper is it can take FAAAR more off than you want. At least TRY conventional paint stripper and if that doesnt work upgrade to the aircraft kind, i just dont want you to **** up the exhaust because ive seen people do that and the old parts are hard to find if it goes wrong...

Over here they used to sell a product called Commandant. It works absolutely perfect for it and takes everything off
