Thats correct,it has less jets and by pumping more fuel over the range(by bigger jets) it tends to smooth out the cam in the low rev range, the same as richening up the idle mixture will smooth out the 'Lumpy' idle(if the cam has been modified) but you will definately get more power over the rev range than Dellorto's and yes they are definately not "fit and drive",you really need to know what U are doing to run Weber's/Dellorto's and even Solex's though these are very basic compared to the other 2.If you don't need to worry about originality,go injection with independant trumpets, will give the same sound with alot more power, drivability and fuel economy, carbs are a thing of the past

The last time I saw a Weber carb was in 1984, highschool. A friend's older brother had a Datsun 180B with the sidedrafts, either two or three doubles. Wow, eye-candy and I still remember the sound.

I've only had Fuel Injected cars
This is the '82 131 model which i had with an engine with 40's webbers mounted on. What a sound..............

Very nice! Did you race it or was it a street car?

dammit, i cant tune a car once a week/month. i barely have time to fill it up and check the tyre pressure once a week

Are holleys are better option then?

The tuning weekly/monthly is a bit of a red herring.
That's only necessary if you're trying to keep it at perfect tune.
For normal day-to-day use an annula clean up and tune can suffice !!

Dont' be too scared of them

Remember though to either get a setup or get a good Weber mechanic and to also uprate the ignition side as fair bet you're throwing in a lot more fuel

hmmm
might have to invest in some of the 100 octane stuff the selling at the servos now... Its for racing so does that mean a weekly check?

But thats why you put them on,to be able to fine tune air/fuel ratio to give U maximum efficiency for a carb, this is why the Weber is still the one of the best carbys around

yeah, but getting REALISTIC the 1 or 2 BHP difference from perfect tune to reasonable tune with a properly jetted Weber is less than the variation in different fuel supplies of the same octane and the effects of weather !!!
You only really need that level of re-tuning for a competition car operating at the peak events.
Don't worry, Blue, it's NOT that necessary

Yeah, but I don't want injection...the ol Hilborn injection units look like that too.

It's not about HP gain it's about drivability,as the idle circuit is still used on accelerating from idle the car becomes very sluggish and rough as the throats are not balanced, all you are doing by "tuning" is re balancing the carbs and idle circuit, the main jets and air bleed valves are not touched from initial setup,of course you can just leave it as 'most' people do but you will just get sick of it idleing rough and having initial sluggishness on acceleration from idle, but they are worth having a play with if you get them cheap!

OK so ive gathered that these things are very much worth fitting if i can get ahold of one. Ill need a good mechanic to fit them properly, ill use a heap more petrol if i fit them, and theyll give me a significant power boost. anything else i should know?

Don't let the cops/transport authorities see them as they are illegal in OZ on post '76 cars as they don't have ANY vacuum ports for emissions or vac advance

ah sorry, cossie, old-school-me tuning and balancing 2 different things.

Yeah, you can maybe have to balance them regularly if you don't have competition linkages. There easy to make with high-spec small rosejoints and rod. Generally cossie and my experience are different on this, never had to do balancing outwith normal tuning for winter/summer etc on the Escort, Imp or Matra. ( But I did make pro linkages for all of them. It's a common problem with older setups that they get all "woobly" and don't close fully and twists on the butterflies cause wear which cause leaks etc. )

However, all sounds academic if the OZ polis won't let you

Balancing Webers officially needs a vacuum column to balance the ports.
BUT, I've seen an experienced driver who could get it by trial and error and listening to the 'timbre' of the air sucked at idle !!!!
