Coach's weird gearbox!

I was on a coach the other day and it had the wierdest gearbox

It had the usual h pattern gear lever but no clutch! You just pulled the gaer lever out of gear, then you could hear the clutch disengage, you put it back into another gear and the clutch re-engages. It even blipped the revs on the downshifts.

Has anyone else seen anything like this on a car and would bit be worthwhile?

it was kind of slow but fairly smooth. it would be good if you were trying to get used to driving a manual coming from an auto.

Citroen DS had it in the 50s !!!!

I'll not join in the debate whether it was worth it in that car as it'll just upset henk4

NSU Ro 80 had it too. But the Ro 80 proved to be a very unreliable car.
So it's an hard comparison for the DS. So I won't talk about the issue too!

That would be more fun to use than the current semi-automatics. I'd like to see that on more cars

yeah it would be fun and useful as you could skip gears which you can't do with a sequential or semi-auto

Sry, what's a Coach? I saw a similar gearbox on an old VW Beetle

Sounds not even unlike the 2-speed planetary box that Cadillacs had from 1902 to 1908...

i have never heard of that, but in like 71 or 72 the VW beetle had the clutch on the shifter. instead of pushing a clutch peddle down, you push the ball on the end of the shift lever down and change gears that way.

My father had a Honda 50 Scooter (30 years or so ago) which had the same type of set up.
