Pokey's REX
Alright.
After several years of talking about it, saying that I would have it in a couple more months, it finally happened. I begged and pleaded with the wife. It was finally financially not too much of a burdon. And most importantly, I finally got off my ass and set up the transport of the thing from the great state of California to Florida. So here it is. A 1981 Mazda RX-7 S. It has the 12A motor, with a 4 barrel carb (not fuel injected unfortunately). it has just a hair over 42,400 miles, the pics were taken the day o got it, and it has been driven about 30 miles since then. It was purchased originally in Anchorage, Alaska by my grandmother. She is still an Alaska resident, although she hasn't lived there for years, and that is why the car has Alaskan plates. I will be changing those out here in a little bit for florida plates. She moved it to California not long after purchasing it, and there it has remained, in a garage, from then until now. It has always been a second (or third) car, and never really driven that hard. I aim to use it as a weekend car, not driving it more often so I can keep the miles off of her. I won't be turboing, engine swapping, or really doing any tuning on it, as I would prefer to keep it as close to stock as possible. It is rather entertaining to drive as is. It is a bit slower than the Mini, and feels very similar when driving in a straight line. The RWD with 13'' very skinny tires makes cornering in it a completely different ball game. It's been a long time since I had a RWD car, so it is quite a re-learning experience. I hope you enjoy the pics. When I finally get it cleaned up, and looking better, (and taking those awful hubcaps off) I will get some better pics, and some shots of the immaculate engine bay.

it only cost me what it took to ship it across country... so just a bit less than a grand.
and as for fuel consumption, you can see the EPA ratings on the original window sticker in the pics. they aren't great. but with as little as i will be driving it, that really isnt one of my my concerns.

Planning to remove those goofy black slats? I'm sure it's a fun little car, this generation rex had a solid rear axle did it not?

Never been a fan of that generation, but free is a good price. I'd even date Rocke's sister for free.

Thats tasty, to bad you can't rock the Alaska plates in Florida. Imagine the looks on peoples faces.
It should look good once you wash/claybar/wash/wax it.

Yes, needs a bit of TLC, but it should be fine afterwards.
Have fun with the car. ![]() Keep the Alaska plates just for the fun of it. ![]() |
