First Cars

I have had my liscense for about a year now and have had to drive around in my dad's beautiful 1998 Ford Escort (American model) 5spd. my parents say that if i wan tto get a car i will have to pay for a good portion of it. this is a problem because i have no money. Though, assunming i get some, are there any cars that are cheap to buy, run, and insure , but arent boring to dive? your 1st car stories are welcomed as well .

1st car was a 2003 Chrysler Sebring which i still have. It's slow but a fantastic ride, luxurious, and the sound system is great. It's just nice to cruise around in. I bought a 3000GT VR4 to satisfy my performance needs and it's good so far though it's getting some upgrades very soon.

If i was to get another car that's cheap and not boring to drive I'd try to get my hands on a VW Corrado or a MK3 GTI. Maybe an older 3 series BMW? Or get a Turbo DSM (Eagle Talon TSi AWD, Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX)

Yeah. It happens... ever heard of doing regular tune ups?

EDIT.

Did some research on crank walk. While it was a problem on DSMs it didn't happen to everyone but it DID happen to some. Apparently changing the oil when needed and doing regular maintenance helps a lot. A larger oil filter is a big help too.

It's apparently just the luck of the draw but I personally wouldn't be too worried about it because it only happened to a few hundred cars. Compared to the thousands that sold, it's a pretty small chance that you'd get one of the bad models. Just maintaining properly would be enough from what I understand.

Honestly, buy something like a civic. Yes you'll be hearing "RICE!" from most of the members on this site. But, its bullet proof, its cheap on gas, cheap on insurance, INFINITE aftermarket parts to tastefully (I hope) modify it as you please. For a new driver who wants inexpensive and fun, this car makes sense.

Be careful with old germans cars (example BMW) and specialty japanese cars (example RX7). Yes they can be beautiful and fun, but in reality, despite the cheap purchase prices, you need to consider parts availability and the amount of mechanics actually willing to work on them, and the prices they charge if they do. Some of those cars can leave you up shit creek with no life raft. This mostly depends on the area you reside in.

If you don't mind shelling out the extra $$, then by all means go for it. I've nearly fallen for many seemingly great more-than-average vehicles, but in the end I've always smacked myself out of it. When you are young and don't have extra money to blow, its just not smart.

Good luck.

Is it the one the Feds took when they raided your house after they found $4.3 million in drug money in a stolen car that belonged to you?

EDIT: My first car was a '92 Camry LE. Go with anything Japanese.

I'd go with an MX-5 if you don't need the rear seats.

Japanese is good, solid and reliable. Dependant on your needs, Miatas or 323s are pretty safe.
