First [Proper] Car.

A little while ago I inherited an 1991 MG Montego 2.0 SLX. And am now finally legally allowed to drive it on the road after getting restricted license yesterday.

My Grandad has owned it since 1991, and my uncle who luckily takes good care of his machinery lived with him (taking care of teh farm). So its in immaculate condition with 150,000km or so on the clock.

It ain't the prettiest of things but its bloody decent for a free car, as new its meant to be pushing a lil over 105bhp (w/carburetter compared to fuel-injected and turbo models) with all its 4 cylinders. Its FailWD unfortunately and a 5-speed manual. 5.6L/100km.

Will post pictures later and egg-nogg if you want one..

Thanks, I'll try

I'd have to agree with you, but there are worse looking specimens.

Gremlin FTL. Well, first cars are like first kisses, they're usually not that good and yet somehow you still remember them.

I don't think first kisses need to be bad - mine was however.

I'm hoping for a much better first car than first kiss.

Maybe a 3-series or 944 or Camaro or Mustang or something.

Then again maybe I am being unrealistic.

Mine was a '64 1/2 mustang. Which sounds kind of like a sweet first car, but it never ran and spent most of the time I owned it in pieces. Me and my uncle were going to restore it, but he ended up divorcing my aunt (can't blame him) and he moved away before we ever got started putting it back together. I couldn't do it on my own, so I had to get rid of it.

I saw a Montego on the street a couple of days ago. It was a Rover though.

Well, congratulations anyway.

Yeah this has been running sweet for ages, no major problems, probably because its been so well looked after.

Yeah, its interesting because the distributor within NZ was actually a Rover company yet the Montego was sold officially as an MG through them. They're the same thing anyways, you'd think they'd keep the British name? I'm not too familiar on how or why this is normally done but I find it a little strange.

IIRC the MG was the sporty version, while the Rover was the normal one.

Like the Rover 75/MG ZT pair.

Seriously....congratulations!
A person's first car doesn't always have to be really nice and flashy. As long as it gets you from point A to point B reliably, that's the most important part.
Anyways, like you said....it's free. Can't beat that!
Hell, my first car was a 1988 Hyundai Excel....it may have been ugly, small, barely able to climb a hill and the butt of my friends' jokes, but it got me to where I wanted to go everyday for several years...without any major problems. Also, the gas mileage on that thing was awesome.....somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-45 miles per gallon (56-72 kilometers per 3.78 litres).
