Ultimatecarpage.com update (02-13-08)
Dear Ultimatecarpage.com visitor,
This week Porsche launched two new racing cars based on the 911/997 GT3 road car. The most anticipated is the revised GT3 RSR model, which will compete in the GT2 class in all major sports car racing championships. Last year the 997 struggled against the faster Ferraris, so an upgrade was more than welcome. The new car features modified aerodynamics and a lighter gearbox based on the unit in the RS Spyder prototype racer. The other new addition to the line-up is the 997 GT3 Cup S, which is based on the RS version of the GT3 road car. It is built specifically to race in the popular GT3 class. As Geneva is coming closer the pile of new releases is growing. A very interesting 'debutant' is the Lancia Delta. It sports a very similar design as the Delta HPE prototype launched in Paris back in 2006. It has to be a success to give Lancia a real chance of survival. Mercedes Benz has further expanded the revised SL line-up with the two AMG models; the V8-engined SL 63 and the V12-powered SL 65. There are a variety of paths to racing success and one is to cram a very powerful engine into a lightweight chassis. This was common practice in the 1920s and one of the most subtle of these was the Bentley 'Blower'. Today we take a look at a highly original Gurney Nutting Speedster, which sold for a whopping $4.5 million at Pebble last year. One of the most extreme big engined sportscars of the 1960s was the Cheetah. Built in very small numbers to rival the Cobra, it sports a massive V8 engine mounted almost centrally in a spaceframe chassis. Unfortunately production and handling problems prevented this very mean machine to ever becoming a success.
