Toyota's spectacular FT-86 Coupe, German electric supercars and new Abarth rally car

At the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will prominently showcase the FT-86 Concept. The compact sports car features a Flat-4 supplied by Subaru, a six-speed manual gearbox and best of all; rear-wheel drive. The styling is clearly inspired by the FT-HS Concept, which was first seen at Detroit's North American International Auto Sshow early in 2007. The production car will be dubbed 86 (pronounced hachi roku), which is a direct reference to the legendary AE86 built in the 1980s. The aptly named FT-86 (Future Toyota 86) should be followed by the final version in the next few months.
Early next year the very wild e-Wolf e-1 will hit the streets. Built in Germany, the minimalistic sports car features a single electric motor that produces 148 bhp and 250 Nm. That's enough to power the single-seater to 100 km/h in under five seconds. The motor is fed by Li-Tec batteries that can be charged very rapidly and give the car a range of around 300 km. A year later it is planned to be followed by the even more extreme e-2, which sports a fully enveloping body. It will come equipped with four electric motors that develop a combined 536 bhp and 1000 Nm of torque. The German company also has plans to develop racing versions of their unusual cars.
At the recent San Remo Rally Abarth launched their latest racing car; the 500 R3T. The new offering from Fiat-Abarth is the off-road version of the Asetto Corse circuit racer. Like all Abarth 500 variants, the small rally car uses the 1.4 four cylinder engine fitted on this occasion with the latest Garrett turbo. The pocket rocket weighs 1080 kg and packs a 180 bhp punch.

We will. It's a joint development between Subaru and Toyota.

hmmm n/a boxer and weight of 1300-1500kg.. not really an AE86 successor i guess, but lightweight cars are expensive these days.
subaru's non-turbo boxer engines are uninspiring to say the least, i hope toyota's influence can put some magic into them when they make it sportier.

toyota said it's getting a 200hp n/a boxer....
they're doing what GM did with the GTO, giving it unrealistic expectations to live up to. this car is much closer to the old celica-supra's.

And why 1300-1500kg? Japanese cars usually quite light even these days.

covering their ass perhaps when they gave that figure? given the dimensions i don't see why it can't come out close to an MX-5 in weight.

Being a 4 seater and bit bigger I guess it'll weight a bit more than the Mazda. But on the other hand it's not a convertible. So I'd say 1200-1300kg and closer to 1200kg than to 1300kg. Anything more than that would be fail.

EDIT BMW sells you a (bigger) 2 litre 3 door hatchback that weights 1340kg.

IMO this thing probably should be closer to the size of a Scion tC with RWD.....this does look to be bigger than that though...

The old AE86 is just a shitbox Toyota Corolla coupe with a dinky 130bhp engine....its not as if there were sportier stock version around. Segment wise this is definitely more upmarket(expensive)....regardless though it should be a good thing since there are no more other cars like S2000 around...

i dunno which version you guys got... but it was pretty much an MX-5 with a hardtop at the time. 130hp in 910kg is not bad at all, and the engines are like toyota's B16..
they have a cult following for a reason (first person to say initial D gets shot)

The new one won't have a live axle. Unless they want to take on the Mustang. Which looks unlikely.
