 e39 m5 is STILL BMW's best
mechanik
10-20-2009
The E39 m5 (aka "the Beast") is an incredible car...I've had the privilege of owning and driving some great rigs over the years - a few of them were 'cost no object' (Porsche GT, Ferrari 335 with FIVE valves per cylinder...Porsche Carerra 4s) and hands down the M5, specifically the e39 m5 is my all time favorite.

I own one in Alpine white and you'll have to pry the keys out of my hands with a crowbar to get it away from me. It IS a very modern machine even today...in so many ways. Other than maybe distance activated cruise control and touch navi), there's not much that the new cars have over the e39 m5.

Find a clean one and then go spend a few hours in it. Alone. City and Highway recommended if you can do that.

The navi isn't the best, but you CAN upgrade to the latest version and 3D maps. You can also upgrade to Bluetooth quite easily and comparatively inexpensively (comparison of course being the cost of a new car.)

My neighbor has a beautiful black 335i and it's incredible in it's own right. He's got the Dinan software and I must admit, that it's a pretty wicked little sleeper. But the e39 m5 is STILL a KILLER - even bone stock. And he openly acknowledges this.

But we both respect each others cars.

The VANOS situation "can be" an issue if you know what to look for and how to deal with it. Truth be told, it's an overblown myth perpetuated on the forums.

You'll love the e39 m5 because of it's practicality - just last night I was moving some shelving home from Home Depot (mine has the fold down rear seats option) and was thinking how much I love that feature and the fact I can fit FIVE full sized adults in my car.

The power....ah yes - the feeling of real V8 power. The s62 engine is STILL one of the best... if not the best power plants M Gmbh has ever produced.

In fact, look at the new M turbo engines coming out in 2010, they are back to 8 cylinders - same basic block as they've used for years and is also in the e39 m5. THe 'x42/x52 and /62' basic engine block... the "m62" is such a reliable balance of racing bred engine and send your mother - in - law to get milk please combination....

Don't be scared about it being an "old" car. Many people on the street still think it's a new car. And people who know cars - will come up to you and talk to you about your e39 m5. Design is a relative and personal consideration.

Chris Bangle did things to the sheet metal on the new e60 m5 that many aren't lovin'... and talk about the way the e39 m5 looks in comparison.

Further thoughts on the fact that some might say this car is now "old" point for minute - there's not too much be worried about if you buy one intelligently. People who took care of them did so with a passion and care that this car deserves. Those who didn't should never have owned one in the first place.

If you've never owned or spent any time around the e39 m5 - there are a number of things you should know. Things like brakes are very expensive - you just can't get away from that. And some option packages are more desirable than others (aluminum trim vs. burl walnut trim). Some cars have mods that you might not want - others have mods that I think are "no brainers" like Dinan's stage I or II software.

There's also a buyer's guide out there called M5 Video Guide that is a pretty good overview on the e39 m5 - it's not totally comprehensive like the forums, but it's a solid start if you don't know much about the car.

One of my all time favorite cars. Best BMW ever built in my opinion.

If you take a look at what BMW has done with their engines it it really remarable comparing that they are all naturally aspirated. Dinan has taken the E39 M5 up to 470hp w/o a supercharger or turbocharger. That's pretty impressive. The E55 is supercharged and the RS6 is twin-turbocharged. If you take a super/turbo charger and put it on the M5 it will blow the E55 and RS6 away. My M5 is supercharged and puts out 637hp and that is just a tad higher than both the E55 and RS6, if you are comparing numbers. It is all a personal preference of what kind of vehicle Manufacturer you like and body style. The newest M5 will come with a v-10 and will have better numbers as stock than the E55 and RS6, but everyone compares it like apples and oranges and they don't mix well. Who knows what ratings you would get with a super/turbo charger on the 05 M5. Again people will compare it to the newest Mercedes and Audi with their forced induction engines. In the end as one writer said we the enthusiast win with the battles of the Makers. :)

From what i've gathered (i read road and track, car driver, lots of TV, lots of video games and lots of the internet), so far it's a draw in the unbelieveable power war. All of mercedes' 55's and 600's have 493hp and their 32's have 349hp. That's a start. BMW's M5 has 400hp and the M3 has 333hp. Bimmer does good on the autobahn, mercedes does good in the drag strip. So both sides are about even. But what does the future have in store for us? Mercedes (AMG) going to build '65' lineup (6L bi-turbo V-12, 612hp, 738lbs-ft) for the CL, SL, the S and maybe the E, i'm not quite sure yet. BMW is plannig to use a 5L V-10 (500hp) in it's M5 M6, and (although i'm not sure) i wouldn't be suprised if they made and M7 using that engine (or maybe a modified version of it). I also think the M3 will be modified soon. So so far, i think it's a draw. But i think the new 5 is buck ugly. And i think that most mercs are outlandisly expensive. So i'm completely undecided.

This BMW is awesome, I would say that it's even better than the M3, The car has the looks, the power, and an agressive touch. This is a marvelous job of BMW. This powerbull with 400Hp is insane, the next M5 will have about 500Hp. Where is this going to end?! Keep driving!!!

Powerfull as sedans go, the next generation M5, which comes out sometime in 2004, will have a....are you ready....a 375kw V10. Now the only reason BMW made this car so powerful is so that they will have toppled the E55 AMG saloon's 350kw 5.4 litre super-charged V8. Did i mention the V10 will be 5.0 litres? As for the next M3, it is probable it will be called the M4. BMW is looking to enhance the M3's power/weight figure so that its power figure should up around 320kws with plenty left in the bag. There will also be an evil-twin to the M3, BMW is reviving the legendary M6. and that is not to mention about a dozen or so variants BMW is planning to launch, such as the sporty 1-series sedan.

"i think the M5 is hot automobile as well. i really think it could use a new bodystyle. most think that the new 7 series is radical, but that is what makes BMW a fine vehicle. BMW is not called the ""ulimate driving machine"" for nothing. the only thing that will make the E55 better is the fact that it is a more powerful car, but i do not think it will gain the popularity over an M5"

One fellow said that this bmw stands no chance against E 55. As a huge BMW fanatic and a hateor of Mercedes. This car is older than e 55. Why don't we wait and see what power and performance is new M5 going to bring with the v 10. oh by the way. E 55 and all mercedes are CRAP.

time and again have enthusiasts poured out their gut feelings on this site. Some favouring one manufacturer, some neutral and others...well just plain defiant. But think about it. 5-6 years ago, there was NO M5(at least worth its mark) or an E55, let alone an S6. Germany has realised, that the market is becoming more mature, and a little greedy. Enthusiaists are growing in number every day, and with a sluggish economy in the past few years, a dream of owning an extremely impractical exotic car like a lamborghini, or ferrari remains a dream. Enter the super saloons. Practical (can seat a family plus decent mounts of luggage), enticing and very exciting. Agreed that these are not pure bred machines due to their extensive use of electronics, but who cares. They go as fast, give the thrill of a street shootout, and can pick up the kids from school! The W210 E55 delivered 349PS, compared to the M5's 400. The W211 delivers 476PS compared to the new M5's 500? Inside news from afflalterbach is that a new S class goes into production next year. They call it the S62 with a possible 600+PS. They could easily modify this 12 cylinder engine to fit into the bay of the E class. Im also sure that BMW will follow suit. So why do we spend enormous amounts of time arguing who wins. Let the corporate industry fight their wars. In the end it is only we, the enthusiasts who are victorious.

"It is all about taste man. I am only 14 damn it but i have driven my mum's car so do not underestimate me!! I like the RS6 more than the M5 but when the hell did i say the M5 was ugly. I would really like to get vulgur but I can't, pity!! Anyway i like the clean conventinal shape like what Audi designs have i am not a really big fan of complicating designs except for a few cars. If you have seen pics of the new 5-series it look exactly like the 7 but it is just smaller. Really i am not kidding at all, it is just smaller. That very ""aerodynamic"" look of the 7 may affect the 5-series's performance to a certain extend but that is not the point. The point is that it is all about taste and do not think a few spoilers here and there will help the next M5 a lot unless BMW does something to the shape now!! The M5 is just starting to look a bit old compared to the newer cars and for the record ibrakeforrainbows, the Rs6 and the s-type rs are never jokes. Do you know how money Jaguar and Audi have spent on the development of their cars?? It does not come cheap at all and like what i said if the RS4 is a basher what about the RS6, killer!!!"

"I have yet to read anything where the C32 takes the M3... at best a tie; maybe it's stats and figures are better, but numbers arn't everything. And I still haven't read a SINGLE article where the E55 beats the M5. BMW has the whole package, despite the lower Hp. It's more of an all-around performance car than the Merc, with equally friendly on road charicteristics. You love the merc to your hearts content. But they'll never be the blend of performance and luxury that BMW is famous for."

Ultimately, BMW has lost. M3 lost to C32 AMG, and M5 lost to E55, according to all the mags and tests. Maybe the M3 deserved to win the C32, but the M5 doesn't stand a chance to the E55. Actually they are very different cars, the M5 may be more sportish than Mercedes with all the electronics. BMW should seriously update the M's to keep up. Well I don't care, I hate BMW's. Mercedes are so much better overall. Still, the M5 is a great car, and so is the E55.
 Don't discount...

The E55 just yet, Black Sunshine. now as much as i like the M5, and the BMW badge for that matter ( we own one, not an M5, mind) if it's raw power and speed you're after, than the E55 seems to have the game sewn up. All other Pretenders such as S-Type R, RS 6 and the like, all want a piece of the action, but it's always come down to the E 55 and the M5. OH, BTW, whats with all the 5's, maybe if audi called it the RS 5 it'd have more luck......

"Until two three years ago I didn't like the 5-Series so much, but I live the last two years in germany so I bought a 2 year-old 520i and turned to a fanatic! Is so easy to drive the car, the behaviour for me sets the standards to the ""friends"" from Ingolstadt(Audi) and Sindelfingen(Mercedes).I did once a test drive in one of these cars and got out totally stunned! It is the devil incarnated! If you have the courage to ""put the medal to the pedal"", then you will experience something incredible. You will feel what is to unleash 400PS in the street and your body beeing pushed to the seat!On the highway yo are driving at speeds twice as the speed limit, without noticing! It has so much power that till 250 it keeps accelerating! On the other side in driving with it in the city is just like an ordinary 5-series,I am fascinated. Now that the new 5series is coming in the market, I hope, the prices for a 4-5 years old car will drop, so I can sit at the driving seat!"

"You and your crap Audi's. If Audi is so great, then why has it still come in behind the Bimmer (with some 30 less ponies) time after time in every automotive publication that's compared them. Ya know why, cause it's too soft. An automatic? THIS IS A PERFORMANCE CAR! What kinda no-nut-wuss buys an automatic performance car, sedan or other. If you got 2 legs, 2 arms, and 2 testes then there's no excuse for an autobox in 400hp (plus or minus) car. How many Audi's have you actually drivin motorhead? I wanna number and pictures. Ya wanna know something else... when I'm driving a car, I wanna feel the speed. You contradicted yourself in your posting... ""you can sence it but you can't feal it?"".... what are you trying to say man? Here's some more for you to think about. Bimmer's better looking (shut up I've read your other posts and streight up, audi designs have no personality... plain and simple), the M5 has top of the line everything including a dash wrapped entirely in leather, and the head liner is freakin suede man... how pimp is that? Audi's Quatro AWD? Screw it. That's right I said it. I don't need it. There are those of us, who in a car such as this, want the feel and handeling dynamics of rear wheal drive. It's more pure, more primal, more visceral. The only AWD cars that have truely matched RWD for a pure, visceral expeirience are the Lamborghini's. AWD also adds A LOT of weight to any car. Dude, face the facts... E55, RS6, all those... they try to out do the M5. But all in all... for the ubersedans, BMW is still the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE."

The M5 is nice, very nice, its better than add S-type R and S6. you cannot compare it to and RS4, because it is a different size class. But you can compare it to an RS6. And and an RS can be tweeked to 612bhp by MTM companies. 'nuff said.

"Given the choice right now between an M5 and a Z06 I'd take the Corvette, but if i had a couple of kids and needed to haul around two or three adults once in a while the M5 would be a very convenient way of ""setteling for a sedan"". Many have tried to duplicate the M5s magic formula and most fail miserably. However in a few months an other German designed sport sedan tested and developed on the Autobahn will debut with a 400+ horsepower engine. The Cadillac V-series which will have a Corvette Z06 ""LS6"" v8 and was tuned and developed on the famous Nurburring racetrack in Germany. I personally am ruting for the little Caddy but we shall see who reigns victorious."

is the best but it is not the best of the best! The audi rS6 is the best of the best, no doubt about it. To prove that to all of you take a look at the 2002 Gumball 3000. There were about 30 RS4s and guess what, they were all caught speeding!! The audis and their drivers had all the time and chance in the world to escape but they were smart, they did not. They just took the warnings and tickets and carried on. When you drive a powerful audi(RS2, RS4, RS6, S3, S4, S6 and S8)You will not feel the power coming at all. You can see the velocity but you cannot feel it thats why when you drive these kind of things you tend to give lame excuses to the policeman like a did not know i was going that fast. These kind of audis are fit for the motorway and the track and they come in a automatic but when you start using the steptronic/tiptronic you feel as if you are using a real manual but just without the clutch. These audi drivers will behave in an acceptable manner unil they see the beserked speedo. If you all have the chance of drving one of these audis you will be so damn overwhelmed by its power and those brembos are brilliant. If the RS4 is already that brilliant, how about the RS6, my god i can only imagine! Now the M5 only comes in manual(hopefully the new one will have both options)The E39 M5 is no doubt a very good car to own and to drive but it does not give you that urge to really perform the car because it is so refined and easy to drive and it is very relaxing too but the audi is totally different. You cannot feel the power but you can sense it so it gives you that go fast urge. The only rival the BMW M5 has rioght now is ther S Type R but the next M5 would be a much better challenger to the RS6!! But all in all the RS6 is still the best 4 door money can buy!

I had always thought the Lotus Carlton was like the McLaren F1 was a one off never to be surpassed great, and then BMW introduced the E39 M5! 400bhp mated to an excellent manual gearbox (a little jumpy around town but who cares)driving the rear wheels with a sublime chassis to boot. Who could ask for more?

Hamann has modified the Bmw m5 thus calling it the Hamann BMW M5. It uses a 6.1l engine(V12)and it is 450hp! It's excelleration is really fast 4.7sec. Top speed is about 311km/h. This a real rival to the RS6 as they have the same amout of hp but the RS6 is limited. Even when you take the speed restictor out of the normal M5 is still does not pass that magical 300km/h.
Quite possibly the finest car ever

Maybe not the finest supercar, but certainly the finest car! Fun to drive, 400 hp, and yet functional with seats for five people. Nice... Now, if it could only shed a few more pounds...
