Austin Healey 100M |

In the early '50's my Father had rather exotic tastes in cars when compared to the average driver in our location. You see, we lived in Southern WVa and 99% of the cars came from GM, Ford or Chrysler. My Dad and a few of his friends had discovered that other countries made cars that were more exciting that American Iron. My Mom and Dad went to Florida every summer and Dad would come back with a different car. One summer they took our XK-120 Coupe and came back with an Austin Healey 100. I have to admit that I liked the Jag more than the Healey, but my Dad liked the wind in his hair. The one thing that I did like was the foldable windshield. While it didn't fold flat like a T-series MG, it did allow for a serious "wind rush". While our Healey wasn't an M or S, it was a fairly quick car with its big 4 and 90hp. I do remember that it came equiped with an overdrive that was engaged with the flip of a toggle switch on the dash. The picture you show is close to my Dad's car. But, intead of black with grey, our's was red with grey. Ah, the memories. |

This little car is perfect as it is, and is not in any way made to receive a heart transplant... Under its "M" specifications, this lively "little" 2,6 liters will bring you as much sensations as the frame and a not less lively rear suspensions can stand ! Healey is definitely not a freeway car, but has a fantastic mood for all the rest and the advantage to be born of a very inspired and successful design unchanged for nearly 15 years. The 6 cyl engine used on the 100-6 did not keep this same temper than the following 3000 versions tried to catch up later. Many small imperfections but a very high reliability and unique character for this very attaching car always ready to go. |

These cars were nice little sports cars bone stock. Like any British car they have their quirks, but they're very cool little convertibles. The most interesting one I've ever seen was a red and black one that had a Chevy 427cu. in. (7.0 liter) engine crammed into the wheel wells! I din't see it run, just at a carshow, but it must be INSANELY FAST! Chevy 350s are also a common engine sway for these cars... |
