In the hands of works drivers like Andrea de Adamich, Toine Hezemans and Jochen Rindt, the featherweight Alfa Romeo dominated the European Touring Car Championship. One of the most formidable results was Rindt's title winning effort in the inaugural Trans-Am championship, beating the mostly larger engined, V8 powered rivals. Through continuous development, often requiring changes to the car's homologation, the GTA remained competitive for many years.

In addition to the original 1.6-litre engined version, Autodelta also produced the 'Junior' version, which featured a 1.3 litre 'four'. Equipped with a 16-valve head, this compact engine could produce a staggering 160 bhp. Around ten of the larger engined GTAs were equipped with twin superchargers, which boosted the power to over 200 bhp. The ultimate evolution was the GTAm or 'maggiorata' for enlarged. These featured 1,750 cc and later 2-litre versions of the four-cylinder engine and also bigger fender flares.

Official records suggest less than 500 of the GTA and GTA Junior each were produced, although it is believed that a figure of around 1,000 for the 1600 GTA is closer to the truth. They were available well into the 1970s at special order. Today the GTA is one of the most highly regarded and sought after post-War Alfa Romeos. While genuine works cars are a rare sight, many of the road cars have been converted to racing specification both in period and in subsequent years, and are regularly and very successfully raced in historic events ranging from the Tour Auto to the Goodwood Revival.

One will be hard pressed to find a homologation special that combines the immaculate racing record, the fabulous handling characteristics and achingly elegant Giugiaro lines of the Giulia GTA.
