Due to the relatively high price only 36 examples (including the two prototypes) were produced as many customers converted their road car instead, often using some or all of the Shelby competition components, which were also available separately. Eventually Shelby built well over 500 GT350s during 1965. Shelby also experimented with the addition of a Paxton supercharger on the road cars Production of the GT350 continued for several more years but the later models were more luxuriously appointed than the thinly disguised racers of the first year.

Official Shelby American test-driver Ken Miles debuted the GT350 R on February 14th in 1965, fittingly at Green Valley Raceway in Texas. Placing second overall, Miles won the B Production class straight at the Shelby Mustang's first attempt. As it turned out, this was just the start of a hugely successful season, which ended with the GT350 as the championship winning car in five of the six SCCA divisions. Among the many famous racers scoring successes behind the wheel of the GT350 were the likes of Jerry Titus, Mark Donohue and Pedro Rodriguez.

Rental company Hertz ordered just over 1,000 examples of the 1966 model year GT350 with an eye on offering their clients something special. All cars were finished in gold with black stripes. Customers soon discovered this as a relatively cheap way to go racing and many rented a GT350 H to go racing during the weekend. This earned the car the well deserved nickname 'rent-a-racer'. Hertz tried to address the situation by specifying an automatic gearbox instead of the four-speed manual for the GT350 H after the first 80 examples had been delivered.

Although the GT350 was the first of many Shelby Mustangs, it remains as the most famous and arguably the best of all. Today, the original GT350 is the most sought after of all Mustang variants.
