These were first offered to the owners of the original cars but not all of them were willing to put down the rumoured $1.5 million required. Eventually customers were found for the remaining 575 GTZs. Each was built to custom order and featured individual exterior and interior cues. The sixth and final car came closest to the first 250 GT Zagato with a similar dark-blue and ivory paint-scheme and additional vents behind the front wheels.

This was not the end of the project as additional customers had expressed an interest in an open version of the Ferrari Zagato. Because of the additional chassis strength required, the 'standard' 575M Maranello was no longer suitable. Instead Zagato picked the slightly earlier 550 Barchetta of which just 448 had been built. Dubbed the '550 Barchetta Zagato', the new machine was visually very similar to its fixed head counterpart. It is believed that only three Barchettas were built. The final example was completed in the Summer of 2010 and is the only RHD version.

The 575 GTZ was among the first of a new generation of custom Ferraris, which has led to an official factory program of which Zagato is now one of the partners. The car's dramatic styling was used for several successive Zagato models. Although, for obvious reasons, the V12-engined machine lacked the racing record of the original, he project was certainly a fitting tribute to the 250 GT Zagato.
