The first major update was a revised body known as the Flunder or Flounder because of the design's flat surfaces. Among the most obvious changes was a wrap-around cockpit with the 'passenger' compartment almost entirely covered. A long-tail, low drag version of the Flunder was also created for Le Mans, which came with optional vertical fins for stability. For the high speed circuits like Le Mans, a revised Coupe was developed, which incorporated all the improvements of the 908/02. Some of the existing Coupes were also converted to Spyders.

Despite the thorough preparations, the 1969 did not have the best of starts for Porsche. The four long-tail 908s entered for the Daytona 24 Hours failed to finish with engine related issues, while at Sebring the new Spyders placed third and fifth. The difficult season opening was quickly forgotten as the 908 in either Spyder or Coupe variant would go on to win the next five World Championship rounds, including the Targa Florio. At Le Mans, a Lang Heck came achingly close to the victory, eventually losing by smallest margin ever to the Gulf liveried Ford GT40. A further victory was scored at Watkins Glen, while the final round of the year was won by the new 917.

After a bumpy start to the season, the 908 really came into its own during the 1969 season. Six wins were scored in the ten World Championship rounds; two for the Coupe and four for the 908/02 Spyder. With just the five best results counting for the World Championship, Porsche already had the title in the bag by round seven. Although the focus shifted to the 917 for the 1970, Porsche prepared one more evolution of the 908, built specifically for the Nürburgring and Targa Florio. In private hands the 908/02 Spyders were raced for many more seasons as the prototype regulations were not significantly changed until the early 1980s.
