No points were scored and to make matters worse Gugelmin and Capelli failed to qualify on several occasions. A thorough investigation revealed that the data retrieved from the wind-tunnel was off. Newey set about rectifying the problem, which resulted in a brand new body and a floor that featured the first ever multi-fenced diffuser. The team principal had lost his patience before the 'B-Spec' hit the track and Newey was fired.

The thoroughly revised CG901B made its debut at the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard. Newey's modifications made a night and day difference; Capelli and Gugelmin led the race until the closing stages. First Gugelmin's engine blew and then Capelli also started to slow down; he did make it to the finish but he could not prevent Prost from getting by at the end. Capelli's second place was a rare highlight that season, which was filled with reliability issues.

For 1991 Leyton House had secured an exclusive engine deal with Ilmor for a V10 engine but it did not yield better results. In September that year Akagi became involved in a major fraud case in Japan and was forced to sell his assets back to March. Under the March name, the team continued in 1992 but that proved to be the final season. That year Williams secured the driver's and constructor's title with the Newey designed FW14.
