| Why not in markets? |
| hamala56 04-14-2007 |
I was very interested to read about this text about Volkswagen 1 litre car. I have some questions about that. Why it isn't yet in markets? Is it because there are no people who want to buy it or is it so expensive to produce? Or are there some technical or legal obstacles? Do you have some answers for me? I'm very interested about these questions? |
| A step in the right direction |

as many people use motorcycles just to get from a to b then luggage space is not an issue. This is the road to a usable vehicle they could make it from cheaper materials and so what if it only does 200mpg and so what if it takes 20 secs to get to 60mph so does the bently with the old lady in the flowery hat driving. We need these affordable and then we need them on the racetrack with GM Ford and Peogeots versions. 5 litres of fuel 90mins and 200kg cargo. Lets make lots of these and start expanding our limits. It would be much more interesting than formula 1 |
| X-Prize Candidate? |
| SolsticeRacer 03-24-2006 |
Heard there's a new X-Prize offering $25M to the first company / person to sell 10,000 vehicles that achieve 250 mpg. If I'm doing the math right, the 1 Litre gets 264 mpg(and if I'm doing the math right on the luggage volume, it's enough for my rolling carry-on suitcase and a laptop case). So if I'm driving 12,000 miles per year average, I'll need to buy 45 gallons of fuel for the year... I could fill the tank on my pick-up twice a year, leave it in the driveway, and siphon off gas whenever I need a fill up on the 1 Litre. Now we just need to convince General Motors to build a few million vehicles like this and the U.S. could eliminate it's dependence on foreign oil suppliers. |
| Why doesn't VW just go out of business already?!! |
| Weber 05-28-2005 |
Ok they make this joke, and an $83,000 Phaeton, what's next? A car with a toilet? It just proves they are marking up their cars to rediculous percentages in order to fund this sort of crap. They should just throw in the towel and realize they aren't making cars, just like apple computer isn't making computers.. (notice how similar the two market?) They appeal to people who buy on impulse and emotion.. Those people only think AFTER they signed the check about what kind of construct or performance the product might not have. Here are my specs for this loser: top speed: EMBARASSING Acceleration: WHO CARES There are diesel cars today that get 66mpg so what's the point of this, whatever you call it? BOO to Volkswagen. This thing makes buying a pinto look appealing. |
| Oh, I overlooked something, when I reread the article,,, |
| RonHolzwarth 02-18-2005 |
There IS some luggage space, about the size of a 20 gallon aquarium, so it is POSSIBLE that you could take your briefcase with you. Or a bowling ball, but not both. A suitcase is totally out of the question, unless you have no passenger in the back seat. There's another interesting thing - the frame is made of magnesium, which is the ONLY flammable metal! And it BURNS REAL FAST! Magnesium used to be available for high performance light weight rims on sports cars, but is no illegal for that purpose in the USA. I doubt very much that a car with a FRAME made of a material that is prohibited for use on tire rims is legal either. This is a "car" you will never see on the roads, at least not in the USA. Because of the high tech features, the cost of a production version would exceed $40,000. This "car" was built as a "concept car", there is no doubt - it will NEVER be built. BUT as a showcase for new ideas, it's GREAT! |
| This is NOT a CAR! |
| RonHolzwarth 02-18-2005 |
This "car" is 4.1 feet wide, 3.33 feet tall, and has tandem seating, with the driver in front, passenger in rear, and NO luggage space - AT ALL! It is remarkable similar in both performance and appearance to another "car" built in Germany in the early 1950s, the Messerschmidt KR. Although the Messerschmidt achieved over 50 mpg (in the 1950s!), it was never extremely popular, although in total some 22,000 of the different models were built. It was nothing more than a covered motorcycle with two wheels in front. Top speed was a whopping 50 mph. This newer "car" is a bit faster, it can reach a WHOPPING top speed of 75 mph - powered by an EIGHT HORSEPOWER engine! The builders of this "car" very wisely don't mention how long it takes to reach 60 mph. I would guess about 20 seconds at least. So don't dare ever drive it on a highway. Or try to drive in hilly terrain. The really serious problem with a "car" that weighs only 639 pounds is the horrible damage (i.e. it will be totally crushed) if it ever collides with a HUGE CAR - such as the Geo Metro, which has a weight of 1,620 pounds, in other words, 2 and 1/2 times the weight of this new "car". So, if you thought Geo Metros are SMALL, think again. The Geo Metro is HUGE, compared with this. And, if you are ever broadsided by a motor scooter, you're gonna die. |

"I really like the fact that VW went about creating an ultra-efficient car by using well-known truths - namely that an internal combustion engine can get spectacular results in efficiency when it doesn't have to do unnecessary work. Rather than using a heavy battery-gasoline hybrid or (for now) pipe-dream, overly expensive ""fuel cell"" technology in a ridiculous platform like the Toyota Prius or Honda's rechargeable toy, they designed a car with a slippery shape and extremely light weight. Rather than show-car engineering exercises or cars styled to be non-threatening for people who don't like cars, they have done something extremely practical that can be manufactured right now." |

This is a new kind of car, that I really, really, REALLY believ in. I'm might buy one as soon as it will be available. It's a car that I think is the perfect combination of a motorcycle and car! Imagine one with some 200+ hp, sportier made and wider tyres... it will for sure outperform any car, and even motorcycle. Who cares if it need 2l/100km, 3l/100km or even 4? It's still a very efficient way of travel. It's a great way of thinking by VW to introduce such cars... it will take years before other brands introduce this type of car, but I believ that will happen. It could be made slightly bigger with excelent comfort, great sound isolation, quiet ride and excellent consumption figures! Here is a link on the 2l, the car with paint! 700 kg, realistic weight and materials. 61 hp strong diesel, and a 150 hp strong gas engine. http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/bil/story/0,2789,266978,00.html |
| may take some getting used to, but |

this car is totally radical. imagine what the highways would be like if this came out 10 years ago? whereas cars like the Carrera GT make the Id of your psyche go balls out crazy, the 1 Litre is what makes the Super Ego break out into a Macarena - it gets you from .A to .B with the least amout gas ,not to mention the fact that you can park it between two adjacent hummers in a parking lot. excellent concept. by the way, didnt i see one of these in your mothers drawer? |
| this is what is going to happen........ |
| motorhead 7-1-2003 |
Bernd Pischetstrieder(cheif of VW)has just said that they will make an extreamly fuel efficient car which can go as fast as a porsche(boxter to be precise) It will be a 1+1 and the passenger will sit behind the driver like in a plane. They claim that they can get at around 100MPG on that car and it is deffinately going into production. I really do not know what the car look like but it is said it will be a two liter car. for all your information this car has 2 names. It can be called the 1 litre or the VW Piech because ferdiand piech drove this car to his last meeting at VW before he retired! |
| good stuff! |

this thing is so sweet lookin, only 8 horse and top speed of 120, more than enough! i hope this car goes into production. id sure love to try it! |
| Simple and Practicle, what more is needed! |
| Steven 10-8-2002 |
The idea is sound and should be explored more by VW. I personally would only buy a production model in a set of two, only if the the retail was equal to the Gulf TDI. A his and hers model with hands free cell phones. I'm not so sure about the canopy during the yearly wet season . The tandom setup is perfect for a baby seat. The 1 Litre would be a safer alternitive to a motorcycle. VW might consider the design for the U.S.A zero emmission production requirements in this century. For now, my TDI and I work in perfect hermony! Maybe some day the 1 Litre and I will work in hermony too. |
| I'm not so sure about this thing ... |
| Marijn 20-6-2002 |
I wonder if this car truly is the technological breaktrough that VW wants us to believe it is. Of course the fuel usage is impressive, but the measures taken to achieve that goal are also quite extreme. Most of them will for arguments of either usability or cost not be adaptable to realistic production models. I wonder what would happen if somebody at VW decided to adapt this car just slightly to put a 'really big' engine in, say 1.6 litre with 120hp ... |
