Yeah, mattg, sorry but the laws of physics makes it impossioble to compress an 80 second med-res video clip into less than 40kb :)

Here's a couple of tries which make it. The second one "looks' smoother because it's spinning fast enough to fool the eye. The first one doesn't :) They are the same size and resolution !!

You need to download the attachment to your computer bye opening it and clicking right button .. save as

THEN in the User CP click the Browse button and select the file on your computer you just downloaded to.

The url option is if you have a known link on another computer.

You'd be very right about that. ;) And the stopwatch checker part? Along time ago Niko FX used to put up his videos of his/his friends running 0-60, 0-100, etc. in thier cars. I would watch the videos and record the time of it like, 0-60 in 8 or 6 or something like that seconds. About time I get rid of that though. It's getting old.

Sorry, Q, that would take a fair bit of work as it woudl either need the 3d model built again OR the modifier would have to manually modify EVERY frame of the animation.
Too much work for the "free service" I think.

EDIT: Actually I just checked and the animation only has 7 frames, so it's not THAT bad - no promises, I'll see over the weekend :)

Befreo I even open it I have to remind everyone of the laws of physics.
You're asking us to reduce a near 2Mb file into 40Kb :( That is reducing it by 50 times :( Don't mind giving us a challenge do you :)
I CAN say to get this it will have to drop a lot of frames, so wil lend up a little jerky :)

The sound seems a good idea till you consider that everyone would do it and could you imagine the cacophany of noise with a UCP page having a dozen avatars EACH productin a different sound simultaneously :(

AnimationShop most of the time - it comes with JASC PaintShop package ( whose older versions are widely "available" on the net )

Cool, I use Paint Shop Pro for everything I do, back in the days I had Psp4 and thought it was the best tool out there... But you needed another programme to make animations...
So when I got a new cpu and saw psp8 "available" I got it, and I'm afraid I havn't had time to get familiar with the gazillion of new functions since then....

The images for this were still in this thread, so no problem.

BUT anyone else wanting a BIGGER avatar ( a 'benefit' of becoming a UCP Supporting Member ) remember that and try to find the original still images at HI resolution. Then anyone doing it will be quicker and make a better job of it.

Did you have to seperate and save EACH and EVERY frame as if using Windows Movie Maker, then convert EACH and EVERY one of them to .gif as if using Paint and then put EACH and EVERY one of them in order and making a .gif as if with UnFREEz like I did?

If you didn't, you're a lucky man :)
If you did, my sympathies are with you :D

Lesson: Windows Movie Maker, Paint and UnFREEz all suck :(, so if you're going to make an avatar, make sure its one that you'll be happy with for a long time :)

Well I'm not saying it's perfect - or even worth the money - but with AnimationShop you can import an avi - it will convert it to single frames and then resize in one click and optimise in another and finished :) Culling to reduce filesize is also a singel step operation. It's the fastest - and the only reason I do so many - it takes less than a minute to do even the hardest ones :)
Before it used to take one tool to convert avi to jpeg image files and then irfanview to combine them into an animation. ALL much too much effort !!
The only issue is that currently AnimationShopwon't take divs or wmv files. So I still have RADVideo aroudn to convert from those to avi :)

I really really really want it because this converting JPEG's to GIF's in paint is killing me - the quality is horrible and the work is slow, AND I want to do chops.

When saving images as jpegs you HAVE to adjust the quality level to get the better images.
Soudns liek you've been saving heavily compressed, so poor image Q.

irfanview's help explains how to do animated files and how to use jpeg :)

And to do batch, just choose the menu optiosn - File ... Bacth convers/rename and fill in the dialog box !!!!

For what it's worth, I spent a fair while trying to get this to work on my own, so it's not like I'm a loafer or anything!

I love this GIF, but the only way i could get it into the filesize limit was to halve the number of frames, remove a few more than reduce the overall size to a quarter of the original. Which just looked silly. So if anyone gets the chance to try something with it I'd be grateful, but I think it's probably just too long a file.

Oh and thanks very much for the irfanview....i converted 50+ frames in just under a second and it was 40% of my work done. THANKS!!! :)

Only thing is now I'm having trouble resizing moving GIF's. Everytime I go I first have to stop animation to resize it. When I DO resize it I go 'save as' and choose GIF. When I'm done I go to the file only to discover it doesn't move :(. But I'm still getting used to it, and reading the "Help" section too. However any pointers would be appreciated :)

IIRC you are best extracting ALL the frames from the animation - Options... Extract all frames....
THEN batch to resize all the frames and then re-assemble them into a new sequence.

Why Animation Shop is SOOOOOOO much easier :)

Well you just delivered a TANKER !!

That's a 3/4Mb file.
I'm good but even David Copperfield would turn away from trying to get THAT down to 30Kb.

Another way to look at it, THAT is an animation of 883 FRAMES.
HOW can you expect that number of frames to fit into a 30Kb file ?
Do the simple maths, that's 33 bytes PER FRAME. Compression is good, just not that good !!!

Look at the running time too.

It is clearly asking too much to expect that to be a UCP avatar.

So please in the future, do simple checks on any avatars you want converted. If the image size is close to the UCP sizes, then there is little chance of reduction. If it's longer than 10 seconds there will likely be problems. If it's greater than 3-40 frames there will likely be problems. If the current file is over 1/2Mb there are likely to be problems. REMEMBER it has to fit into 30Kbytes, so some applied common sense will save upset later.

So sorry mattg, NO CHANCE that will ever fit.
BEST size it reduced to was 300Kb, so you can pick 1/10th of it - either by selecting a part or by accepting a MASSIVE cull - but that makes it jerky.

To see about an animated gif, right click on it and chose properties. You will see the filesize and the image size. If you save the animated gif on your PC you can then right click on it, properties and the Summary tab will tell you the number of frames. If these are a LOT larger than the indications above, don't expect a simple resize. You need to pick what part of it you want. THEN ask nicely - coz now you're asking for MORE work than a simple resize :)

I just use Irfanview to resize my avatars. Matra told me about it. The program is great for resizing but I haven't figured out how to make a slideshow with it yet. So I resize the files and convert them in Irfanview then put them in to a slideshow using Animation Shop 3. I only have the trial though. :( .
