a byte is 8 bits.
A bit is a digital 1 or 0.
It takes 8 bits to encode one character
a kilobit kb is 1024 bits ( it's a computing K so not an SI unit )
a kilobyte is 1024 bytes ( 8196 bits )
Watch out some people will call 1000 bytes a kilobyte :)
( strictly it should be but us computer nerds dont' count normal - hell we start at ZERO :) )
Don't get me started on why a megabyte is 1024*1024 bytes and not 1000*1000 :) and yet nobody gets it right !!!

For the really nerdy when you get to transmission systems then a byte of information may well require 10 or 11 bits to transmit, so comparing transmission speeds can be a bit geeky to ask if start and stop bits are included in the counts and if packing bits and CRC for HDLC frames are counted or not !!!

You all thought I was bad enough on cars :) Cars are where I've spent all my money. Coimputers are where I've earned it all :)

3747 down, 357 up to the linked site in Bloomington
1050 down, 354 up to the Megapath test site in CA, but that's clear across the country
3840 down, 374 up at the My Speed website, which is more consistant and accurate for me.

Our cable company has been steadily increasing it's speeds for the last couple years. They started out at about 2000/128 when it was first available 5 years ago to 4000/400 now.

My speed is pretty shtty now... considering my computer is 3-4 years old and it's a peak time for my cable modem. It probably would'ave helped if i tested in New York City w/ Messenger off too.

Mine is only "Your download speed : 370723 bps, or 362 kbps.
A 45.2 KB/sec transfer rate."

Can someone tell me why this is so slow, my downloads are normally about 60KB/sec .

I pay £17.99 a month, with wanadoo.

Is there a way of improving your speed?

i should probably do this again when I'm not on AIM, UCP, limewire, iTunes, and email at the same time ;) .

That should give me a speed to be proud of
yes, i'm being a dork right now

My upload isn't cooperating right now. It should be in the 800 range. Maybe later tonight I'll get a real nice one.

Test running..........
** Speed 1275(down)/491(up) kbps **
(At least 25 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

I was alos on MSN messenger +3 IE windows...I'm not sure how that's gonna affect the test results....
