the S4 with supremely powerful V8 engine and 344 bhp. Its permanent quattro four-wheel drive and sport-tuned high-performance suspension ensure that this power can be converted into maximum forward propulsion and driving pleasure. The car’s equipment, which covers virtually every requirement even in the standard version, is also in keeping with the exclusive nature of this high-performance vehicle: 18-inch wheels and Recaro sports seats at front and rear are just two examples of a standard specification that is exceptional, even for a car in the premium segment. The new S4, like its predecessor, is available in both saloon and Avant versions.

The further refined V8 engine with chain drive at the rear and a displacement of 4.2 litres delivers 253 kW (344 bhp) and 410 Nm of torque. It consequently sets clear benchmarks in the B segment: a benchmark for a supreme and even development of power resulting from the large swept volume, and a benchmark for unmistakeable dynamic handling.

The power-to-weight ratio of the new generation has been further improved compared with the predecessor: this factor, which says so much about a car’s sporting character, has been improved from 5.8 to just 4.8 kilograms per horsepower. The eight-cylinder engine’s thrust thus enables the new Audi S4 with its new 6 speed manual gearbox to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. It takes just 20.6 seconds to reach 200 km/h, whilst the top speed is a governed 250 km/h.

The new S4 is the only car in its class to have quattro permanent four-wheel drive. It can therefore convert its engine output into propulsive power most efficiently at all times and reach new heights of superiority in practice through the handling potential of its aluminium chassis.

Steering with an extremely direct ratio means that the S4 can be guided absolutely precisely around all kinds of corners. In other words, driving pleasure in the purest sense, on the motorway as well as on challenging mountain passes.

The Audi S4 also offers other qualities that have already become a well-known feature of the S models with the four-ring badge. Just like its predecessor of the same name and the larger S6 and S8, the S4 is the top sporting version in its respective model line, and not only in terms of power. Its equipment specification and top-quality materials underline this status.

The S4 is notable once again for its unique combination of unmistakeable style and sporting exclusivity, of individuality and versatility: available as both a saloon and an Avant, it also offers its owner distinctive everyday quality.

I will have to agree with you hotflank. I would have to call myself a diehard Bimmer fan, but admit that the new Audi is one potent machine. And if BMW continues it's current design trend I might just have to become wanas4 instead of wanam3.

ok hes the thing. there is an ambush in your town and you have 5 people in your family you would like to save. you have two cars which are both globally respected and desired the bmw m3 and audi s4 but the problem is you have to leave one behind and fly away with the other one - remember 5 people so obviously the s4 is the choice and the performance is almost the sameor maybe the same with the bmw m3 long live the m3 but the audi s4 lives longer(LOL)

I would agree with motorhead, I'd chose S4. Indeed M3 has become a great car, but S4 looks more ....eeee...how should I say this...Well, its too good to be coment about... But, I need to say; thumbs up for Audi, BMW and Merc for their genius design that would last a lifetime, rather than Japanesse cars...

Woah, that was quite the analysation... :)

As far as appearance goes, I'll still take the M3 (I tend to like coupés better than sedans) but the Audi is definately becoming more potent! You can't argue with the power and torque of this V8.

ok here is another story(LOL) ok you have important guests coming in about 3 hours time very important and you need to get some rations from the supermarket but the problem is the supermarket is far away, about 80km away and you have a whole load of cars in your garage. you have a mercedes benz c32 amg, bmw e46 m3. alfa romeo 156 gta, volvo s60r and the one and only audi rs4 avant. very obviusly youre gonna take the avant. you need space, speed and practicality. so there you go another story, i'll try and make more(LOL)

Okay, firstly, yes the S4 is a potent car.

However I can't imagine a scenario like what motorhead proposed ever happening to most people in the free world. Ambush in my home town and I need to save 5 people?? WTF? I can't imagine anyone actually factoring that sort of scenario in when they are purchasing a car like an S4. If people have that sort of reality then an armored Merc or BMW or even a Hummer would be more appropriate than a stock S4.

Living 80km away from a Supermarket? LMFAO

I went camping in a remote area of Australia and was still only 45km away from supplies. People who live 80km+ away from supermarkets and have garages similiar to what you described will have people to do their groceries for them, if not a helicopter.

As the sort of person who will probably never afford to own more than 1 or 2 cars at any one time in my lifetime, the M3 is without a doubt the purest driver's car out of that list. The C32 is Auto-only and the others are AWD or FWD.

Screw practicality- the M3 is the most fun for the driver who knows how to have fun with a car. It makes the least compromises towards driver enjoyment and for a driver will be the pick of that bunch anyday.

p.s. Who else reckons HotFlank did a cut/paste job on the original comment?? ;)

I tried the convertible 3.0 v6 and it is..... FANTASTIC!!! The multitronic shit box is good but it would be nice to put the DSG shift box to hear the motor because the multitronic is an automatic and the DSG let you decide when you want to change gear and have also the mode multitronic...
So there are the photos of the S4 and the A4 Convertible :
