How the hell did this manage to slip under radar?

Saleen must have kept it pretty quiet. They just introduced the car this afternoon at L.A.

0-60 in 2.8 secs  I'd love the Stig to get a crack at it, fastest car ever on the Top Gear test track?? Could it top the McLaren FI's 240 MPH top speed? Maybe :)

Surprising that theres no intercoolers tucked in there, not even a water to air unit. Otherwise pretty damn impressive

I was just thinking the same thing... odd that they've got it run straight out of the snails and in to the intake... no air cooler of any kind in there... too bad - but still hella sweet.

Well not that long ago i saw this turbo kit for the Pontiac GTO that had a single turbo behind the left rear wheel, so like theres 8 metres of turbo piping to and from the engine, and they claimed there was no need for an intercooler as there was minimul heat from the engine affecting the airflow. Perhaps theres a similar thing going on here, with a far bit of piping on the S7, perhaps theres sufficient air flowing around the engine to cool it enough

I don't care if you plumb the thing from the trunk back to the front - the exhaust used to drive the intake side of the turbo get's hella hot and heats the intake side of the turbo and the air quite a bit... if you're going to get the "free power" with a turbo, you might as well slap an IC of some sort on it... sure they're getting added intake pressure, but they'd be able to get even more power from cooler, higher intake pressure...

but who am I to say... 750 horse is QUITE substantial...

hehe, best part is both are using OHV engines...

theres also this thing

Uses the LS6

EDIT: oh yeah, cant wait until this gets put up against the Enzo, I have a feeling the ferrari guys are going to go home whining "ferraris arnt about track times bla bla bla."

for the boost their running(5.5 psi). intercoolers woudnt provide much power. their probly using highly efficient turbo's and at such a low pressure heat isnt really a problem. if they were running like 15psi then they would need intercoolers to run on pump gas. and they would be making well over 1200hp as well...

and about the ferrari comparison... "enzo"? whats an "enzo"? haha!

!!! Twin-Turbo 750 HP !!! 2.8 0-60 times!! There is no comparison. Saleen S7 will out perform anything that gets thrown and it. wait scratch that . . . it will SLAUGHTER ANYTHING that the competition throws at it . . . Cant wait to go see it at the LA Auto show this weekend!!

Saleen stick turbos on to beat everyone else.
Everyone else sticks turbos on and are back in front.

(Top Gear laps)

Dodge Viper SRT-10 (~500bhp) - 1 Minute, 28.5 seconds
BMW M3 CSL (~360bhp) - 1 Minute, 28 seconds

Chevrolet Corvette (~400bhp) - 1 Minute, 26.8 seconds
Lotus Exige S2 (~190bhp) - 1 Minute, 26.4 seconds

Lambourghini Murcielago (~580bhp) - 1 minute, 23.7 seconds
Porsche GT3 RS (~400bhp) - 1 minute, 22.3 seconds

Porsche Carrera GT (~610bhp) - 1 minute, 19.8 seconds
Ariel Atom 2 (~300bhp) - 1 Minute, 19.5 seconds

Big numbers don't mean fast laps.

(Anyone pointing out that the latter cars are lighter, more track orientated cars will get a kick up the arse for pointing out the blatently obvious, we're just talking about power.)

idd like to see what that engine looks like. have any links or pics?

this saleen is sweet. I would like to see a enzo vs s& comparison now. the saleen is not just about power, its a pretty good handler. and saleen now has gained experience from its S7R so they are bound to put some of that knowledge into this new S7.

could be quite interesting.

Yeah, that was pretty cool. the guy only made it for the sake of being the only one in the world to do it. Performance-wise, there's really no advantage at all to having a setup like that :)

the latter cars were lighter more track oriented cars ;)
it has ALOT to do ith the comparison, basing everything off power alone is not an effective way to compare cars. this is a reletivly light(lighter than the enzo) track riented car with more power than the oposition, it should translate to some decent lap times. we'll have to see :)

its sort of cheating, using turbos, especially when the engine already has a 7litre displacement

fpv_gtho
01-12-2005, 03:13 AM
Yeah but its also still OHV....whether you see that as a disadvantage or not. Me personally i think it'd go alot better with DOHC

clutch-monkey
01-12-2005, 03:14 AM
it just seems like something someone would do as an aftermarket accessory, like that twin turbo F50 etc

fpv_gtho
01-12-2005, 03:17 AM
Well alot of Koenigsegg's are supercharged, but they dont use anything near a 7L engine. Turbo's are becoming more popular though, but the F40 did have them afterall. And considering theyre running 5.5psi each and no intercoolers, i'd say theres still alot left in the engine

clutch-monkey
01-12-2005, 03:23 AM
yes but the f40 only had a 3L V8TT, to save weight over a V12. and the saleen was very fast n/a. i don't know why, i just think superchargers is more acceptable on a big engine, like the koenigsegg/amv600

fpv_gtho
01-12-2005, 03:27 AM
Its an interesting thought. Both wouldve worked pretty good, but i suppose when youve got a 7L engine how can you resist not sticking a couple of snails on :p

01-12-2005, 03:28 AM
yes, i guess the figures speak for themselves..:)

fpv_gtho
01-12-2005, 03:30 AM
Should be interesting to see how far someone pushes one, 7L and a pair of ball bearing turbo's, you'd think there'd be hardly any lag

clutch-monkey
01-12-2005, 03:33 AM
i think we'll be seeing someone reach 1000hp just because they can
i wonder if saleen will have reliability trouble now that they have two turbos fitted

You can't just take a car, stick a twin-turbo in there and just watch it go faster and faster.
The F1s setup is just fine. The engine fits the gearbox and chasis.
The car got exactly the power it was meant for.
Stick a TT in there and the car will be completely unbalanced.

They might have managed it with the S7 but they sure did a lot more than just instaling the TT.
You can't do that with every car.

fpv_gtho

Your right, you need to balance everything to make it right. The S7's known to have enough downforce to drive upside down, and they still revised the S7 TT's aerodynamics
