My favorite SUV is the Volvo XC90

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/large/1100-4.jpg

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/large/1100-6.jpg

The Volvo XC90, introduced in 2002 at Detroit in the USA and Geneva in Europe, is the first genuine SUV (sport utility vehicle) from Volvo Cars. It has been developed with strong focus on the Volvo core values: safety, environmental care, versatility and quality. Built on a passenger car base, the Volvo XC90 combines the comfort and road holding of a conventional Volvo with the characteristics of a rough, off-road machine.

The model contains several new technical solutions for increased flexibility and driveability. The vehicle can be ordered as a five- or seven-seater. There are three different engine options: a six-cylinder 272 bhp petrol engine, a five-cylinder 210 bhp petrol engine and a five-cylinder 163 bhp diesel engine.

The Volvo XC90 is manufactured at the Volvo plant in Torslanda in Gothenburg, Sweden.

At least here in my city, there's no use for a SUV. Good stationwagons or sedans can take me form A to B with the comfort necessary and carrying all luggage/load needed.

The only times in which it is actually better to have a SUV is when travelling on the interstates during the season of heavy rains. Potholes will appear everywhere and you'll soon find yourself driving on all parts of the road except on your lane.

My Mom was driving home from a small town 200km away from here today. She tried her best, but eventually she found herself victim of a pothole that gave her two blown tyres. Any decent SUV would have most likely not surrefered the same faith.

Just so I don't get too much off-topic, after giving it some thought, I beleive my favourite SUV is the X5, based on the rieviews I've read and comments I've listenend to. I saw a Cayenne about a week ago, sadly, it looked like a complete turn-off.

The Cayenne looks way better than the X5. No offense, but the X5 is the ugliest SUV ever.
There are shure alot of Cayennes out on the road, it is a very expensive SUV. I've seen a lot of the $88,000 USD Turbo models, which must mean people really like it. I mean, people really don't spend over 60k on SUVs.

I don't have a favorite, but I think the GMC Yukon Denali and the Ford Expedition are up there for usability (they'd be my choice if I were looking) ... unfortunately SUV's have been popularized by people who never use them for their intent.

I think it would be easier to make a list of least favourite SUV ... topping that list would be the Pontiac Aztek/ Buick Rendezvous.

i know you might be hard to pursuade (im pretty sure i spelt that wrong  ) but have you seen the Australian Ford Territory? Its a crossover based off the Falcon but a different body, rather relying on components sharing like with the engine, transmission and diff mostly. Zerk and SL500, i wont go as far as spelling out what SUV stands for but theres very little criteria that makes a car one. Here we used to just call them 4WD's, but recently with the Soft-Roader and Crossover markets pulling themselves forward, VFACTS, the people who record monthly and YTD vehicle sales in Australia, changed the category to SUV's

Nissan Murano and 1st-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.

And that Ford Territory looks a lot like a Ford Escape, but the Escape is a Ford-Mazda collaboration I think. Or at least Mazda has its own version, the Tribute.

fpv_gtho
03-14-2004, 01:27 AM
the body was engineered by Mazda, the mechanics are Ford. The Territory and the Escape have their visual similarities, but thats where it stops, theyre nothing alike under the skin. The Territory was benchmarked against the X5 in development and unlike the Escape's 2.3L and 3.0L engines, the Territory comes with a 4.0L straight 6

The Hummer in Holland has to be driven by people who actually have a truck license. The total weight of the car (including payload) comes over 3,500 kg, which is the upper limit of what you may drive with a normal license. Recently there was a programme on TV where they show funny things happening in traffic. The police had stopped a yellow Hummer with darkened glass. The driver said that he had actually bought the car because of its looks. He was stopped by the police about every 500 kilometers. It turned out that apart from driving the Hummer the guy was another menace to traffic safety as he was a salesman of darkened carglass, which makes it impossible for other drivers to see the face of the idiot behind such glass. Eyecontact is a prerogative for traffic safety, so as far as I am concerned the police could have his license withdrawn on the spot.

Lamborghini LM002- It was the most powerfull SUV for well over 10 years using the Countach V12. That honor now belongs to the Porsch Cayenne Turbo S. after your own exhaustive tests

the cayenne is reliable, solid, well built, quite fast, handles like no other suv, powerfull brakes, and most important of all, amazing on road abilities.

The landcruiser, is also very well built and reliable, loads of torque, and it is by far the best for offroading in almost all terrain types.

the only negative aspect besides milage, is that neither of them is very attractive.

when you buy an offroader, you dont just keep it off road for its entire life, obviously it will be driven on the road as well.

not to be picky, but are you suggesting the cayenne's unique ability is perfect for rough roads outside Europe/US (e.g. Australian outback, Brazilian fire road, African dessert roads). Any amazing on-road-abilities will be useless on a scarred broken track where if you had an X3 it would break your back for example.

Exactly. Any perceived offroad ability the Porsche supposedly has must be weighed against more mundane concerns .. like its lack of a spare wheel eg. Talk about useless

Its just another quasi 'offroader' albeit a high-performance one. So if that's your ideal vehicle then why not waste a lot less of your dollars on something like a turbocharged Ford Territory for well under half price of the cheapest Cayenne?

an x3 would be ok. however, in comparisson to the cayenne, it lacks power and it has very minimal offroad abilities. personally ive never driven any suv with the grip and the traction the cayenne has, you can easily cruise at 200kph on a bumpy highway and easily change lanes at these speeds without feeling excessive roll orwithout feeling that your going to flip it.

nota, I think people buy the Cayenne because of the Porsche badge, the image of safety from a large SUV and the fact many people (including me) really love the Porsche Cayenne's styling/physical appearance, performance and the boldness and agressive nature of the Cayenne... people usually buy a Cayenne for those reasons.

Mate in the core of things I'm sure people buy Cayenne principally because of two reasons - either their badge-driven egos or the 'perceived' resale

It's as simple as that, imho

Actually IB4R, I have seen a Porsche Cayenne S driving along a beach and I saw a silver Cayenne Turbo with mud on it yesterday. Some Cayenne's are driven on rough and dirty terrain.

I don't believe you :p

obviously the carparks in Adelaide around schools/shopping malls are below par :p

Honestly IB4R, I swear I am telling the truth.

Adelaide has some terrible carparks though :p but the vast majority of Adelaide carparks do not resemble a typical Baghdad street or a female mud wrestling ring... or whatever you are supposed to call it. :D

Maybe he'd been thrashing it beforehand and it was cooling down
That sometimes happens with mine go to hard first off and it will tick or ping a touch at idle.

Obviously my favourite is the Range Rover. However, G Wagon's are returning to Australia next year so a username change will probably be in order :)

Great choice. The Ozlanders can build a nice engine.

Manual?

I'd prefer a manual, yes. My Dad had a '90 F150 shortbed with the 300 and 5-speed...shoulda kept it. That was a workhorse.
