My friend will be geting his first car next year. He will have around 18k  (lucky bastard!) on account of a good job and nice ass parents. He would like sumthing kinda of sporty but probably wouldnt want to work on it too much. Any suggestions?

A well equipped scion tC would fit that price quite well.

Sumthing quazi- sporty, cant be convertable. has to do well in the snow, , 18 - 20k price range, 2door, back seat doesnt matter, and suggestions would be great., btw none of these are set in stone, thats just to give you an idea.

Hmm, I wouldn't recommend spending all his money on his first car which he will more than likely crash. But, I do recommend a Ford Focus... they retail for what, 16k?
Edit: just checked out ford.com and a top of the line focus runs you about 18k plus taxes and insurance and sh1te so I'd recommend the focus hatch 5-spd man w/out all the options.

I go with a Used car. Get more bang for your buck. Here are a couple of suggestions:

3000 GT TT or Dodge Stealth TT (good all weather driving)

WRX STI (good all weather driving)

RX7

Corvette C5 (probably the best bang for your buck)

Mustang Cobra or GT

I can vouch for the Stealth R/T TT/3000 GT VR-4... I've got a Stealth R/T TT with AWD and it gets around better in the snow than my Nissan Pathfinder...

Would reliability be an issue with the turbo? thanks for the help.

Scion tC is a good choice, maybe a two or three year old Mini Cooper. Lets see maybe an older Impreza/WRX, I am not sure what those run for however.

well, my Stealth is a reliability nightmare... but it's not becuase of the engine... it's becuase the person/people that owned it before me wailed on it... I have several friends with turbo cars and they don't seem to be any less reliable than a non-turbo car...

sounds exactly like the price range of the miata/solstice/sky. All are rather sporty, RWD, and convertables. If he wanted to he could probably invest in a hardtop as well.

Note the word RWD and the word snow. They do not mix. I'd say go for the old WRX or an old Audi (you might even be able to find a quattro). Or, if he wants more luxury, more safety, and a slightly less manic ride, go for a used Legacy H6. Those are what I see a lot of in Vermont.

Depends what you want to do.
The A110s managed the snow quite nicely :)

But having to swap to snow tyres and studs when necessary might be too much hassle and then AWD is better :)

I'd still say go for the H6 legacy (3.0 flat-six). It's plenty fast enough for a first car, and without turbo lag it should be more rewarding to drive in Chicago.

I think he was refering to the usefullness of a laggless car in city conditions, but i dont live near chicago...

@myporsche: In city driving, a turbo often doesn't have time to spool up. A turbo car that's permanently off-boost is hell.

Not alwyas true.
Certainly isn't the case with the A610. 3 litre V6 is happy toodling around town doign 1500 revs and pulls away fine with enough torque.
The turbo is only there to give it the REAL oomph on track and motorway - and occasional twisties :)
It's the engines that NEED the turbo to to get power to overcome low torque and high mass that will struggle. I can't think of any cars that make that mistake now :)

Tell me about it. My dads friend owns a supra TT. He only does about 3 miles a day in it. So every two weeks he takes it on the quietest motorway round here and takes it up to about 160 to clean the turbos

Remember the drag race between the Evo FQ400 and the Stilo 1.6 on Top Gear? They started doing 30mph in top, and the Evo was left standing. It took 2 or 3 miles to catch up with a rented FIAT!
(note, FIAT is in capitals because it's an acronym, not to shout.)

the FQ400 took a whole 1.7 mile runway to get on boost but a) the EVOs probably heavier and b) the FIAT would have been in 5th and the EVO was in 6th was probably a taller gear i dont think that was a relevant test it was just to prove a point about the lag cause you'd have to be a moron to leave your car in 6th at 30mph and whinge about the performance
