Ok. I have just turned 17 and i want to buy my first car. I want something fairly cheap, between $20,000-$40,000 Australian, and i want to be able to do it up pretty well. Any ideas? I saw a Skyline parked on the road with a for sale sign. I rang the guy and he's selling it for $23,000. I'm not sure what kind of skyline it is but its way more sleek than the R34.

23000K is about r33 pricing and its a very good buy - its fairly common in that country

Good buy ay? I might look into it further. I was also looking at a WRX and i was thinking about an MR2. What do you think?

for a first car i think your looking at the wrong type of car. i wouldnt exactly go AWD as a first car, because theres more things in the drivetrain that can break and they cost alot more to replace. i personally would probably be keeping my eyes out for an older XR6, but thats just me

you're 17 and can afford a Skyline?!?!? I wish I had you're job! I'm looking at used Fieros for $2000 CDN but alas poor me :(

U want a cheap car $20 000 to $40 000. Now im 16 i dont consider that very cheap. Why dont you go for a Mazda RX7 S 4 or 5. About $10 000 for a resonable condition one. $10 000 or $30 000 (whichever way you look at it) left in your pocket to modify it! 13b turbo youll have plenty power with resonable mods bigger turbo intercooler etc. I dont like ricers but i wouldnt mind one if it were given to me. :p

im seeing a problem here. a young driver being encouraged to go out, buy a relatively cheap car and tune it up. that just spells disaster. i also wouldnt reccomend a rotary as a first car, as they require a fair amount of attention. if you expect them to require as much attention as a piston engine, your going to find yourself needing to rebuild the motor

Firstly if this guy is telling the truth hes got $30 000 to play around with i think that just about covers a re built, wouldnt you say?

well rotaries are pretty cheap to rebuild comparitively speaking, but its not really a wise decision for an unskilled driver to be driving around in a tuned RX-7 dont yuo think

If you've got the money then hunt down an RX-7 R2 Factory race prepped. Even more fun if you are a competent driver.

I guess you guys are right, I am setting my first car standards a bit too high, but i am not a completly novice driver. I got my L's when i was 16 and i have been driving my mums ford Falcon. All that saved up money is what you get when you start work at 14, and put away all the spare change you have. Trust me it adds up!

well although youve started driving legally as soon as you can, how are you going to feel if youve spent big on something like an RX-7 and wrapped it around a telegraph pole because youve floored it over an oil patch. not as bad as if you had done it in an old XR6 or something like that i'll tell ya. one of my friends had an EB falcon and he reckons he barrel rolled it a couple of times through a paddock after swerving some animal around a corner. he brags that a couple of the trees the car went through got cut about 5 foot off the ground. i highly doubt he was doing the 80km/h, something closer to 120 comes to mind.

I think its perfectly alright for a a person on P's to have a fast car. How fast he wants to drive it is upto him, dont you think?

Nah your right about getting such a fast car so early. But now i dont no what kind of car to get because all the cars i like are quite fast!

look for something that seems solidly built, has ample safety features and you think your going to be comfortable with. im not saying you shouldnt go out and buy a performance car as your first car, just i wouldt think twice before doing it. your most likely to crash when your on your P's than most other times so you dont want a road rocket to increase the chances of it happening. either way at the end of the day its your money to spend on the car you want
