Audi RS4
High-performance Avant

quattro GmbH, a subsidiary of Audi AG, has launched the RS4, a high-performance car with uncompromising sports character in terms of both technology and visual appearance, onto the market.

The RS4, which, like the already legendary RS2, is to be produced exclusively as an Avant model, will impress discerning customers who are enthusiastic drivers, thanks to its superlative performance. Such qualities are assured by a 280 kW (380 bhp) V6 biturbo engine, permanent four-wheel drive, overtly sporty suspension tuning and a high-tech brake system of a rating that reflects the engine's high performance.

The RS4 has cast off the visual understatement that typifies the S4: the strikingly flared wheel arches, the 18 inch alloy wheels, the front apron extending well down, with its large air inlets, the aerodynamically styled tail and the side sills harmoniously integrated into the body line emphasise its character and performance quite unmistakably.

As on the S4, a 2.7-litre biturbo V6 engine with five valves per cylinder is at work under the hood of the Audi RS4. Audi’s engineering experts have taken what was already a very high-performance engine and extracted even more power and torque from the original version used on the S4.

The RS4 engine develops 280 kW (380 bhp) between 6100 and 6700 rpm. The V6 biturbo reaches its peak torque of 440 Newton-metres as low down the engine speed scale as 2500 rpm. This maximum torque is available up to an engine speed of 6000 rpm.

The six-speed manual gearbox with ratios chosen to suit the car’s sports character, together with permanent four wheel drive, converts the high torque of the biturbo V6 into propulsion and traction most effectively and with excellent directional stability. The time taken by the RS4 for the sprint from 0 - 100 km/h is
4.9 seconds; it needs 17.0 seconds to reach 200 km/h from a standstill. Its electronically governed top speed is 250 km/h.

In keeping with these superior performance data, the RS4's brake system has been completely redeveloped. Much larger composite-type brake discs have been fitted at both the front and rear wheels.

18-inch wheels provide sufficient space for the RS4’s more voluminous brake system. The 8.5 J x 18 cast aluminium wheels with a 9-spoke design have
255/35 ZR 18 tyres at front and rear.

The vehicle body has been lowered by around 20 millimetres compared with the A4. The control arms of the four-link front suspension and the pivot bearings are of aluminium.

The spring/shock absorber units and elasto-kinematics have been retuned to suit the modified axle weights and axle geometry. Rack-and-pinion steering with a direct ratio also contributes towards the vehicle’s distinctly sporty handling

The interior of the Audi RS4 is characterised by sports appeal combined with individuality and exclusivity. The individual interior equipment features, made from choice materials, are visually co-ordinated to produce a harmonised overall appearance in which the colour Onyx predominates.

The Recaro seats for driver and front passenger are a standard feature, providing stability, optimum lateral support and ample comfort, however long the journey may be. The range of leather door panel inserts reflects the options for the seat upholstery. The new gear lever knob design is adorned by an eye-catching aluminium ring.

The standard equipment specification of the RS4 includes is extensive: it includes driver and passenger airbags, side airbags at the front, and Audi's SIDEGUARD head airbag system. In addition to the Recaro seats with centre armrest and the leather seat upholstery, the automatic air conditioning, heated seats and the "concert" radio with a 170 Watt Bose sound system are available at no extra charge.

The Audi RS4 is the first model to have been created by quattro GmbH and developed in conjunction with Audi AG. Together with its special series, customisation range, exclusive accessories and lifestyle articles, the RS model series is a further significant product range offered by this Audi subsidiary.

The cars will be assembled and finished at quattro GmbH, at the rate of no more than a few cars each day, in the best craftsman’s tradition.

Last Audi RS4 leaves Neckarsulm

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. This also applies to a very special Audi that the company wants to remain exclusive. With 6030 models built, the RS4 will now go down as another milestone in Audi’s history. Based on the Audi S4 Avant, it was hand-finished in stages, with loving attention to detail, at the exclusive company quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm.

Its success story dates back to June 2000 when quattro GmbH designed the RS4 as the absolute top model in the A4 series. It was the first vehicle that this fully owned subsidiary of AUDI AG had developed in its own right, in conjunction with the parent company.

The RS4 is entirely geared up for sheer sports performance, without losing sight of the need for everyday suitability. Such potential is ensured by a 280 kW
V6 biturbo engine, quattro permanent four-wheel drive, 6-speed gearbox, overtly sporty suspension tuning, 18-inch wheels and a brake system designed to suit the engine's high performance. A tremendous peak torque of 440 Nm is available throughout an extremely wide speed range from 2500 to 6000 rpm. The superlative performance of the Audi RS4 is confirmed by the fact that it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed (electronically governed) of 250 km/h.

Strikingly flared wheel arches and 18 inch alloy wheels of 9-spoke design unmistakably emphasise the character and performance potential of the RS4.
The front and rear aprons extending well down with their large air inlets are as unmistakable as the side sills harmoniously integrated into the body line.

quattro GmbH continues to offer a more refined variation on the RS4 theme with its sports package. This comprises the following elements:

• Recaro bucket seats for driver and/or front passenger
• Perforated composite brake discs
• Sports brake pads
• Sports suspension with springs, shock absorbers, 4 additional springs and anti-roll bars
• Suede steering wheel rim and suede gear lever knob
• Floor mats with embroidered RS4 emblem
• Sports exhaust system with modified silencers and matt-black coated tailpipes.

The only things I hate about this car are: first the big chromed grille (what were they thinking, I liked Audi's because they were understated), and the steering wheel (again what were they thinking, this isn't a race/riced car...).

Agreed with almost all of your comments. It is a great car but has no real aesthetic value. It looks nice, and thats about it.

In Switzerland, featuring BBS wheels.

I use Hypersnap (http://www.hyperionics.com/) for my (minor) image editing; it does good in my experience, except maybe for those photos that have already been scalled one, two, or more times. Used it on my avatar <---. It's not free though.

I love it, although I like the AVANT better !!! Still can't match the old one though (B5), but it's getting close...

I sure hope you're talking about looks only, because in performance it blows the old one away.

Not really, I mean as a total-package...the olde RS4 definetely became a cult-car. At that time it was something really special.
