Based on the watermark in the corner, I'd lean towards agreeing with you. But, it looks realistic enough to me. :)

But, Dino the dinosaur was purple...get it? :)

Nopassn and I saw that on our trip out to Cali last summer to all the shows. Being a K-State fan and alumni, Roy thought it was important for him to have a picture of it. :)

technically it is, but it was badge engineered as a Dino, which continued until 1979, when the Dino 308 finally became the Ferrari 308 GTB/4

I was gonna say the same as I scrolled through the pics, Ferrer beat me to it. Enzo didn't want to label it with a Ferrari badge and they never did. In those days real Ferraris had V12s, the Dino had a six. Ironic because the successive evolutions of the Dino became the more popular Ferraris. The modern mid-V8s.

That'd be like saying that the Bugatti Veyron is a Volkswagen, only with a different badge;)

The Dinos were a separate line until 1979 as you've said, and in my opinion that's enough to qualify as different cars from the contemporary Ferraris. As PerfAdv has said the Dino line has survived till out days, the latest example being the F430 though now they are labelled as Ferraris.

Ferrari has it listed on their site as a historical model. That's enough for me to consider it a Ferrari.

That just proves the power of badge engineering. You are probably very much aware that the Dino was badged Dino in honour of Ferrari's son who died in 1956, but who allegedly was the man who designed the first Ferrari V6 which was used in the 156 and 246 Dino F2 and F1 cars from the fifties. Later on the Factory presented the handsome 206S Dino as a two litre prototype/sportscar, also fitted with a Ferrari badge so the name Dino was already used by Ferrari (and with a Ferrari badge on the car) well before the sportscar was presented.

It could be a similar history to the Edsel, fathers naming cars after son's names. More coriously though there was another car which also carried the Dino name, though it was the model (I'm talking about the Fiat Dino) and not the brand.

I know, I know, it was done to homolgate the engine in Formula 2 wasn't it? That's why at forst it had a 2-litre all aluminium quad-cam V6. This (family of) engine also graced another car, the Lancia Stratos, which had Ferrari insisted in saying no, it'd have ended having the 4.7-litre V8 from the Maserati Bora...

henk4

and Dino being the designated name for any Ferrari V6 engine Fiat was very happy to call its cars Dino as well. The Dino F2 ran as a 1600 cc, the Tasman version had 2.5 litres.

Perhaps it is interesting to note that the yellow one (at least in post #43) is one of the very rare 206 GTs...See chassis number on picture number 2
Outwardly the 206 and 246 can be distinghuised by the position of the doorlock...

If you owned one tho would you want people thinking you had a classic Italian sports car or a hyperactive animated purple dinosaur sitting in your garage. ;)

I'm not a Ferrari man, and in any case there's always the inverse snobbery of not having a Ferrari badge on the bonnet. :)

I'm not a huge fan either Ferrer an early coachbuilt Alfa would do me just as well :D Not for snobbery tho, just because of the beautiful flowing bodylines. It'd have to be something usable like the Dino as well, not a trailor queen.

The manufacturer i am fond of also starts with F "Ford" mostly the '60s to late '70s European models (hence in part i chose this username) but i also like the early Mustangs, actually i'm pretty partial to any of the muscle cars to be honest. :) All of which including the Dino fit within my preferred 20 year timespan of most desired cars. :)

It could have been :) the RS moniker has been so widely used through-out the years. I had a couple of guys on a sim racing forum think it was Porsche, god forbid tho that someone might think it was Renault Sport.

which actually begs the question, what was the first brand to use it? My bet currently stands on Veritas, but there actually might pre-war stuff. BMW motorcycles maybe?

RSOWNER
12-10-2009, 10:00 AM
The Veritas RS would put it at 1947 yes ? That would pre-date my first assumption of the 1954-55 Porsche 550 RS Spyders, the earliest car using it in my database of currently 389 makes + 7450 models (I've only recently come across the Veritas brand while researching early BMW's but haven't added them yet since details are pretty sketchy that i've read so far).

Who would have thought my username could spark off such an intriguing question. :)
