Sebring was over, F1 was 3 hours away. What was I to do? Pop in GT4, that's what. But racing wasn't curing my boredom. I needed a goal. Build a 10 second car. I owed Vin Diesel one.
So to stay true to my roots, I picked up a stock, no mileage 71 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi.
All runs were with AMS/TCS off unless otherwise noted.
Base run
0-60mph: 6.3
0-100mph: 12.5
1/4mile: 14.568
Exhaust + Chip
0-60mph: 5.8
0-100mph: 11.6
1/4mile: 14.012
*Traction problems start
Clutch + Flywheel + Driveshaft
0-60mph: 5.8
0-100mph: 11.0
1/4mile: 13.927
Soft Racing Slicks
0-60mph: 4.4
0-100mph: 9.6
1/4mile: 12.622
*Traction problems solved
Weight Reduction Stage 1 + 2 (1564Kg)
0-60mph: 3.7
0-100mph: 8.4
1/4mile: 11.956
Port Polish + Blueprint/Balanced Block + Wt Stage 3 (1528Kg)
0-60mph: 3.8
0-100mph: 8.1
1/4mile: 11.977
*Traction problems back, probably due to no weight on rear tires
Racing Transmission
0-60mph: 3.6
0-100mph: 8.2
1/4mile: 11.808
*Traction problems gone, probably due to longer gears
Nitrous (50 shot)
0-60mph: 3.6
0-100mph: 6.9
1/4mile: 11.193
*Traction problems back in 1st and 2nd
Supercharger
0-60mph: 4.3
0-100mph: 7.5
1/4mile: 11.636
*Traction problems until 5th gear, which was basically the whole strip
TCS level 4
0-60mph: 3.4
0-100mph: 6.0
1/4mile: 10.456
*No more traction problems. This also let me spray nitrous the whole way, which helped a LOT in trap speeds.
LSD
0-60mph: 3.4
0-100mph: 6.1
1/4mile: 10.455
2.910 Final Drive
0-60mph: 3.3
0-100mph: 5.7
1/4mile: 10.352
Then it started getting really interesting. I bought the racing suspension, and took all the camber and toe out of it. Then I tried different combinations of shock/spring rates, which seemed to have little to no effect at all. So back to the gears it was.
I raised the final drive from 2.91 to 4.100 again, set the Auto setting to 25, and dragged the gears down individually. From there it was just making little changes. The racing box is a 6 speed, but I ended up running it as a 4 speed for the 1/4. I was losing too much time running it as a 5 speed.
The final transmission setup was
1st: 1.863
2nd: 1.175
3rd: 0.825
4th: 0.645
Final: 4.100
Best run
0-60: 3.0
0-100: 5.666
0-125: 7.316
0-150: 9.633
1/4mile: 10.218 @154mph
..............Base.............Final
Wt..........1841Kg..........1528Kg
[email protected]@5000.....763@5000
[email protected]@4000.....901@4000
I was hoping to build a sub-ten second car in this Charger, but after an hour of tinkering with suspension and gears, I just don't think it's possible. Still, to take 4.35 seconds off a quarter mile is pretty impressive. I've got 2 pages of notes for future projects. I think my next project is going to be a 10 second AWD car- STI, Skyline or VW R32. :)
