Sebring was over, F1 was 3 hours away. What was I to do? Pop in GT4, that's what. But racing wasn't curing my boredom. I needed a goal. Build a 10 second car. I owed Vin Diesel one.
So to stay true to my roots, I picked up a stock, no mileage 71 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi.

All runs were with AMS/TCS off unless otherwise noted.

Base run
0-60mph: 6.3
0-100mph: 12.5
1/4mile: 14.568

Exhaust + Chip
0-60mph: 5.8
0-100mph: 11.6
1/4mile: 14.012
*Traction problems start

Clutch + Flywheel + Driveshaft
0-60mph: 5.8
0-100mph: 11.0
1/4mile: 13.927

Soft Racing Slicks
0-60mph: 4.4
0-100mph: 9.6
1/4mile: 12.622
*Traction problems solved

Weight Reduction Stage 1 + 2 (1564Kg)
0-60mph: 3.7
0-100mph: 8.4
1/4mile: 11.956

Port Polish + Blueprint/Balanced Block + Wt Stage 3 (1528Kg)
0-60mph: 3.8
0-100mph: 8.1
1/4mile: 11.977
*Traction problems back, probably due to no weight on rear tires

Racing Transmission
0-60mph: 3.6
0-100mph: 8.2
1/4mile: 11.808
*Traction problems gone, probably due to longer gears

Nitrous (50 shot)
0-60mph: 3.6
0-100mph: 6.9
1/4mile: 11.193
*Traction problems back in 1st and 2nd

Supercharger
0-60mph: 4.3
0-100mph: 7.5
1/4mile: 11.636
*Traction problems until 5th gear, which was basically the whole strip

TCS level 4
0-60mph: 3.4
0-100mph: 6.0
1/4mile: 10.456
*No more traction problems. This also let me spray nitrous the whole way, which helped a LOT in trap speeds.

LSD
0-60mph: 3.4
0-100mph: 6.1
1/4mile: 10.455

2.910 Final Drive
0-60mph: 3.3
0-100mph: 5.7
1/4mile: 10.352

Then it started getting really interesting. I bought the racing suspension, and took all the camber and toe out of it. Then I tried different combinations of shock/spring rates, which seemed to have little to no effect at all. So back to the gears it was.

I raised the final drive from 2.91 to 4.100 again, set the Auto setting to 25, and dragged the gears down individually. From there it was just making little changes. The racing box is a 6 speed, but I ended up running it as a 4 speed for the 1/4. I was losing too much time running it as a 5 speed.

The final transmission setup was
1st: 1.863
2nd: 1.175
3rd: 0.825
4th: 0.645
Final: 4.100

Best run
0-60: 3.0
0-100: 5.666
0-125: 7.316
0-150: 9.633
1/4mile: 10.218 @154mph

..............Base.............Final
Wt..........1841Kg..........1528Kg

I was hoping to build a sub-ten second car in this Charger, but after an hour of tinkering with suspension and gears, I just don't think it's possible. Still, to take 4.35 seconds off a quarter mile is pretty impressive. I've got 2 pages of notes for future projects. I think my next project is going to be a 10 second AWD car- STI, Skyline or VW R32. :)

Wow, props on the tenacity. As a GT series fanatic, it's nice to see someone else that loves getting as deep into the details of the game as possible. Maybe soon I'll be able to say I beat your time :D:D:D

You can take off everything except weight reductions, port polishing, and engine balancing in the Settings menu before a race.

If you've got 2 memory cars, go to the PS2 browser and copy your game over. Then just mess with one of them for fun and use the other for your career progress.

The HPA R32 is a twin turbo car. It's already built to the balls. They screwed up the pricing though. $31,000 is the price of the package, not including a donor car. http://www.hpamotorsports.com/r32.htm

I'm working on a R34 Skyline now. I'm running mid 9's with a stock turbo and transmission, and TCS off. I think a low 8 is do-able, maybe high 7's. Oi vey...

Watsup Brian Spilner. :) Are 9's doable w/ stock turbo and transmission in a skyline or did the game developer's make the skyline better than it really is due to fanboy love?

I doubt it's possible with just about any car. To get 9's in something around 3000lbs you need more like 700hp, not the <500 I had in the R34.

My best run was 8.585@180. Running a 3speed or 4speed had result within .05 of eachother.

Quiggs, Rockafella was making fun you/calling bullshit, because a stock R34 skyline can not run 9's. I assume you mean that the gears and turbo's are the same, but you've upgraded everything else?

Oh yes, and auto's are for sissies... even in Video Games. It's not hard to use two fingers at once, one for nos and the other to hit the gear button.

The rest of the car was upgraded, but the gears and turbo were stock. I think it was at right about 470hp.

I guess I'm a sissy. ;) For dragging I might change the controller setup so I can run the gears with my left index. But a lot of true drag cars use auto's so I don't feel bad doing it.

How did you time the 0-60 times ? Manually with a stopwatch and stopping it when you think it hits 60 ? Or can GT measure it for you (I don't see this feature..) ?

Uhh, no.. I wasn't making fun of him. I'm saying GT4 must have hyped up the skyline because of its huge fan-boy base. FFS, there are like 30 diff. skylines in the game and they all prob. have boosted stats.

theres a drag strip and like a 10 km test rack you can run on from the main screen. it measures 0 - 100 (im in aus) 0 -150 0 - 200 and brakeing distance and a whole bunch of other stuff.
