Are CV joints supposed to have any play when they are rotated back and forth

no, but you may be feeling the play in the diff.

if the JOINT has play then you need to get it serviced/replaced :(

I am thinking its bad...i have some weird vibration at certain speeds. I was holding the shaft of the axle while i rotated the tire back and forth so i am pretty sure i wasnt feeling the play in the diff...I think i will jack up the other side and check it also..

Thanks for the reply

Put the car on full lock and drive it.
If it clunks or grinds then it's either the wheel bearing or the CV.
If it bangs, it's the CV and is BAD - stop driving :(

Jack the car up and push/pull the top/bottom of the tyre and see fi the wheel bearing has movement. If it doesnt, then the noise is definately the CV.
Sorry man :(

I cant say ive heard of that, alot of the Isuzu's we get are either SUV's and pickups which just get rebadged as Holdens, or full size trucks.

Turn the steering wheel as far as it will go in one direction.

Drive in a circle and listen.
Turn it full in the other direction
Drive in a circle and listen.

now if its starts clunking, stop. the diff will get its teeth stripped off and will go into the transmission

i have a similar problem in that there is a rattling at the front - apparently the CV joints are leaking or something ( i know jack all about mechanical stuff). honda told me its cheaper to replace the drive shaft or something (~$320_)

Not quite that sever - unless your diff is made of cheese.

The cage on the CV will tear first and dump it's contents on the ground.

IF your CV was that bad then it's best it doee it sooner rather than later :)

Few CV joints are repariabel withotu special toosl to reassemble the cages.

So, yes, replacement is often cheaper than the tiem to repair.
Used to be common on rally Minis , strip and replace the cage and balls every couple of events. Coudl tear up a meatal cage on a forest event failry quickly :)

I have heard of rebuilt ones being available. I think they grind everything out and replace it with larger balls.
