So I am running out of space, but I still have a good 7 gigs left, so it is not yet an emergency, but I am in desperate need of either another harddrive, or an external one or something. The reason I want help is for the whole process of finding a good one to go faster, so I can A) Back up my computer so I can re-do it a bit, and B) get a little more harddrive space (this second piece is optional).

-I am looking for something small, 20 gigs is fine, any bigger is overkill.
-It must be cheap. Quality is a concern too however.
-I do not care for high RPM rates, or that it has USB2.0. If it works, it is fine.

So yeah, it needs to be simple, it is mostly going to be for the "odds and ends" files that I do not use overly often, and to have a good number of my files backed up onto it or if possible, all of them.

-The price can be close to, but CANNOT EXCEDE $200 (American).

The Amacom EZ drives come in abotu that for 40Gb, USB or firewire.

OR if you're feeling up to it, get an 80Gb drive and put it in one of htese for HALF the price :) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6759338572

for less than $200 you could get a 160gb or even a 300gb.
i bought 2 160gb hdds(don't ask why, and no i don't pirate), for like $80 each and that was about 2-3 yrs ago.

check www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com , either Maxtor or Seagate or Western digital.(just don't get IBM if those are still sold)

Clarify, do you want to stick this IN your computer or use it outside to backup and move files between computers ??

What medium are you planning on using to shift your files? You don't care about USB so its either CD or Flash Drive....

.....or Floppy :D

If you got lots of stuff you wanna transfer I think USB would be your best bet. Medium you can use that 1GB Flash Drive and small stuff you can use a CD

For some reason my Ipod can't do anything like that. I am updating it with my music soon (haven't done so in awhile as I did not want to lose my friend's music), so maybe it will work now.

450GB isn't a lot really..Do some video editing once.. I've got about 260GB and it's really full at the moment I'm holding out until I can pay me a new PowerMac so I can get some big internal drives instead of always adding external drives to my PowerBook. Something for this summer (I hope).

there's been many many sales out there for 160gb hdds for less than $100, i was able to get 1 in november 2003 which is almost 2yrs, by that time there were allready bigger 1's.
1 of my friends was even able to get a 160gb maxtor diamond 9 for $40 dollars as it was on sale with 1 rebate, you just gotta find the deals, which happen almost every month.

It can but u have to open iTunes and then plug the iPod in. Then it'll go on autotun if u used it as a harddrive before. if u dont u have to go to my computer and it should be there as a removeable harddrive. As for the music, its going to delete ur friend's music and put the music u have in iTunes onto it.

Yeah, that's why I have put doing this off for a while. I don't want to use my Ipod though, as it is only a 15 gig, and with all my music on it only has 5 gigs left. So it isn't really big enough.

I got an 80 gig and before my PC crashed (Doh didnt' back up, don't need lecture on how stupid I am) I had used about half of it.

The thing is our old Pentium 200 which we've had for over 8 years never EVER crashed an d lost data.

I only have about a bit over 300mbs worth of music. I have very exact music tastes...

I think I am going to get a second harddrive, and just copy a good chunk of my files to the new one (which will be at least 120 gig, my priotities are changing a bit). I decided a brand new harddrive would A) be good as I am running out of room, and B) will help my computer be faster without getting rid of files. I think I have it now, thanks people.
