Environmental campaigners have called for the BBC's Top Gear programme to be scrapped as they claim it promotes irresponsible driving. But how fair is this criticism?

This is friggin' ridiculous...

Just wait till TG start up.

Jeremy upset Transport 2000 by publicly tearing up one of their press releases on Top Gear. So they're now acting like 12 year old kids and trying to think they can convince the BBC new board to ban 'em.

Most of us have already written to the BBC and the BBC Board review making sure they realise how many folk out here ENJOY Top Gear :)

F***ing losers with no life. The first 5 minutes of the 1st episode of Top Gear for next season should be dedicated to flaming and dissing "Transport 2000".

Take every single press release by Transport 2000, and shove it in a Dragsters exhaust pipe!

Hippies should be pro-top gear, because all other gears achieve worse fuel economy. ;)

Hippies, for the most part, are cool. However, every sector has its idiots. Environmentalism is very important, but this doesn't really seem like a very good method of activism.

Cartman in the episode "Die Hippy Die" episode identified 3 different types of hippies. The "giggling pot smoking hippies", the "Drum circle hippies", and the "College know it all hippies". Hippies are cool though for the most part, most of the concerts I go to have a near all volume of hippies, really nice cool people. But every crowd has their mistakes.

an eco-friendly group setup in the UK to address the need for an integrated transport solution.
Set up to report changes for 2000 hence the name.

They're stuck in the past so the fact their name is too kinda seems appropriate :)

Sadly now seems to be headed by a w@nker who hasn't progressed beyond playground arguments and not understood civilised debate - he'd do well in the USvIraq thread :)

You can find them at http://www.transport2000.org.uk/

and if you want to see typical British humour at it's best, there is a "sister" site at http://www.transport2000.co.uk/ ( which to me just shows how antiquated their concepts are NOT to have grabbed the other transport 2000 domains to stop the piss-taking :) ) eg a parody of TopGear attack --
Steve went on to highlight an example. "In the popular drama series '24', Jack Bauer is frequently seen driving on his own from one predicament to another in a large black 4x4. There is no need for him to be driving such a large, polluting and environmentally un-sound vehicle, since he is travelling alone and on well surfaced roads. We will be contacting Fox Television to campaign for Jack to drive a Smart car in any future series."

we could add there that the smart will have to be fitted with a diesel engine and a particle filter. In a sense this is a far more realistic example than the banning of topgear

ive never met a hippie. i really dont think that banning top gear is going to SAVE the earth from air pollution, global warming or deforestation.

Lol. I love it when a fair point always works out to the owners disadvantage :)

How long is the tunnel?

You should've kept a bag with you. Maybe then you could've shone a torch on those things you keep banging into. Hey, you never know what may come in handy.

It's a good job he's afraid of the dark then.

There's not much I can say to that.

Did you know that comedy god and global TV-adventurer Micheal Palin and fellow comedy god and author Terry Jones are affiliated with Transport2000.

I was completely dismayed to learn that these two people are utter numpties.

From PistonHeads:

In response, the BBC said that the programme has proved a smash hit, and is one of the broadcaster's most popular programmes. The BBC said, "None of the presenters advocate or encourage dangerous driving, and high performance cars are always tested in a controlled and safe environment."

"The programme regularly features discussions of issues across the whole gamut of motoring. It does review fast cars but it has also recently featured the new Smart car, as well as a series of items on restoring cars and a second-hand car challenge. To say Top Gear encourages just a macho or yobbish attitude simply isn't true."

"Half of its regular audience of three million viewers is women. A recent example [of discussing green issues] would be in December 2004, when an engine was featured that was half electric and half petrol powered."

best response on the Top Gear comments website challenged Traspsort2000 to ask Palin how much fuel he used in his numerous circumnavigations of the world TV shows :)
