Gates has been making noises about hte XBox being a media centre for the living room.
So fully expect to find a brain-damaged copy of Windows MC in there :)

Excellent.

1080i on ALL games.

3 cores and 2 threads each at 3.2 G isnt' going to set the heather on fire given what the Extreme Editions are doing. It's going to be fast enough to make the new XBox the equal of current top end home PCs, so for bang for buck if they introduce this at the traditional $299 price point it will be a winner. IF they do options though making a fully functional powerful maching say 399 or worse 499 then it'll need some maarketing limited games releases to ensure it's success.

EXCELLENT bandwidth on the busses though, will help lots with AI if they get the latency right.

Will need to see confirmation fo what Xbox LIVE GOdl subscription service is about as it seems to be the only way to do streaming media and mp3 si throguh that subscription method ( more monthly $$ ). Surely the starting Xbox has to be abel to play connected mp3 and mpeg4 media content ????
EDIT> It's OK, phew, I misread the page, offline playing of the media is included.

Custom IBM <<PowerPC>>-based CPU

-3 symmetrical cores at 3.2 GHz each
-2 hardware threads per core
-1 VMX-128 vector unit per core
-1 MB L2 cache

It sounds an awful lot like a modified version of the PowerPC 9700 (aka the G5) the processor that powers the Powermac Towers and Servers used by Apple. It will be the first 64 bit CPU in a console system (I think).

Also I wonder if it will be backwards compatible with the old xbox games...

The PS2 is 128 bits.

For me the number of bits in a processor is not so relevant as even for the most detailed world co-ordinate mapping doesn't need to go beyond 16 bit.
To put that in context, if a "world" was mapped down to 1mm resolution , then 16 bits would give you that detail ALL THE WAY OUT to objects nearly half a mile away :) 32 bits just gets even silliar with 1mm resolution on objects all they way out to 25 MILES :)
SO 128 bits is only for bragging rights AND to utilise smart multiple ALUs to do simultaneous vector math. IF three is a fast enough bus and intelligent cache then it's not so important.

Will Xbox games definately work in Xbox360 ? Got a link/quote ??

I dont think it matters how good the Xbox360 will look. People will constantly criticise and nitpick it because its an Xbox, hence microsoft.

I thought the Nintendo64 had a 64bitCPU

Are you going to be able to buy the low entry one and buy a MUCH bigger internal drive from a MUCH cheaper source and get a win-win or will MS brain-damage somethign to rip off the customer (again)

What I ment was the CPU will be 64 bit and the GPU (graphics processing unit) will probaly be 256 bit (computer video cards have already achieved this).

ah right , yes, OK.

[computer geek] number of bits for specialised processors don't really compare well. We built a 1024 bit ALU way back in 78 for a special database processor :) [/computer geek]

So anyone got a site for the REAL meat of the spec, REAL performance figures, or was the MTV thing all gloss and candy ??

It wasn't really that special.

10 Minutes of Emo guys playing "music"
10 Minutes of watching some idiots playing X-Box games.
5 Minutes a look at the box and a short talk about it.

Oh well... I wasn't really expecting more from Mtv.

xbox live silver comes for free, and you can do everything you can normally do, (download music, movies, extras for your game, etc.) the only thing you cant do is play on live during the week. on weekends you can play.

xbox live gold you pay for and the only extra you get is that you can play during the week.

I wonder if Bill's Xbox marketing guys know about what Bill's Windows marketing guys are saying :) Wonder if BILL knows ??? :D

7. Grow with Windows XP
If you're a serious gamer, one of the best reasons to use a PC running Windows XP is that you can upgrade components whenever you want. Got a great deal on a new video card? Put it in. Want to upgrade your audio technology from stereo sound to 5.1 surround? It's easy. With console machines, you're stuck with what's under the hood for good.
