I've been working on my little 914 since November (2002). The picture is of the car in my neighbour's driveway before it was moved to the shop...

It's nice to know that you have a good taste for european cars. When ready, your car will have a nice soundtrack to be heard and it will certainly deliver the goods, allthough it's just a 2.0.
No matter what people might say about those cars, they are still Porsches, and that make's them special enough. It's not only a nice driver's car, but it also has an uncommon and atractive shape. Exciting rather tan beautiful. Just like a little supercar. Hope you will be enjoying it soon!

I have revved it a little, after I got the engine up an running, but I have yet to drive it around. Sounds lovely though :) It's not by sports car standards very fast (0-100kph in around 9.5), but it does have perfect 50/50 weight distribution and excellent 4-wheel discs to boot, so it should be a fun runabout.

I bought a set of 160lb Autocross springs for the rear suspension (front is adjustable) that should stiffen up the handling a little more in addition to lowering the car around 2cm. Just a little more elbow grease and she'll be driving me around this summer :) Just pop the roof in the rear trunk (yes, it has 2 trunks) and hit the road!

the 914 is one of the most underestimated sportscars ever! The handling of those cars are very very good. People may call it ugly, but people who know how good the car actually is, really start to like and fall in love with her looks. Nice car man!

Thanks for all the appreciation so far, guys. It's great to hear.

PorscheNut, I've added you to my buddy list...

It's funny, I was just about to say the exact same thing. The 914 is a very nice track car and at the time of production it even out-handled the 911 range.

Very nice indeed. ;)

I hope you did not pay alot for it, the 914:(

The last thing I did was pay a lot for it :)

It had been sitting in my neightbour's driveway for around three years and he basically wanted to get rid of it. It was actually his nephew's car, so I called him up and asked him what the problem with it had been. He told me that it had been well-maintained and that it had according to him "just stopped working" one day. He had it towed to his uncle's house (my neighbour) and tried to fix it, but he found that there was an electrical problem. He thought that it was probably the D-Jetronic system (ECU), and I guess he eventually just gave up. So I scored a hell of a deal: He wanted 500$ for it, and eventually I cut the cheque for him at 450 Remember, this is Canadian dollars, so that's $285 American.

After getting it towed to the shop, I hooked up a charged battery and the popup lights/horn/etc all worked, so I tried the engine. It basically coughed and sputtered a short few periods of combustion. After a couple more tries, it was time to go to work.

First, I pulled out and looked over all of the electrical relays. Nothing wrong here. I called up my parts guy (a 911 and 914 specialist) and he told me that the problem would never be the ECU, so I skipped over that.

As it turned out, it was the ECU, but not directly. The wire grounding it to the frame had broken (which kind of explains the previous owner's comment that it had "just stopepd working". So I bolted down a new ground and the 914 roared to life. It would constantly rev higher and higher, but that's only because there was no vaccuum stoppers on the air filter.

So I was quite happy!

So far, my costs have been: (CAD/USD)

$ 450/285 - The car itself
$ 75/48 - Towing
$ 120/76 - Rear passenger side brake caliper (minus trade-in of the old one)
$ 100/63 - Set of rear 160lb autocross springs
-----------------------------------
Total: $ 745/472

Thanks for reading my horrendously long post :)

Sure, here's an update:

Brake Bleed, New Rear Calipers, and Refinished Rotors
Bodywork Finished as far as welding goes
Bondo has been started (just the old rust spots being covered)
I took off, repaired, and polished the starter motor

Here's what still needs to be done:

I will soon be welding back in a peice where I can re-attach the rubber accelerator pedal
Both door handles must be fixed (one broken, one just not seeming to work)
Alignment
New driver's side headlamp
New e-brake cable
Sanding, priming, painting

That's all I can think of for now. If I get the chance to bring a digital camera to the shop, I'll post update pictures.

some kid i used to know drove his 914 around a corner at 80 and rolled into a telephone pole. i think his was the least powerful version, but it said porsche on it, right? I don't know what he's thinking, but he's not thinking much now....he messed himself up pretty good.

No insult to your car, it just reminded me that he was driving a 914 too. Get a rollbar if you can, that would be REAL high on my list, simply for safety's sake. And don't drive like a 16 yr. old kid with more power than brains.

Egg Nog

Actually, the bar along the top of the car is a rollbar! Right where you attach the rear clips of the hard top. I suppose it's fairly flimsy though... as far as rollbars go. When this kid crashed, did he actually completely roll it? Now I'm curious...

Anyway, maybe my 160lb progressive autocrossing shocks will prevent such an occurance :) But they do make my car look a little funny, at least until I can figure out how to adjust the front shocks down...

Anyway, I drive pretty conservatively, like a 17 year old with more brains than power :p If I ever want to let loose, I like to rip up Cypress Mountain with my buddies where it's safe to go pretty fast. And the huge parking lot at the top is sweet for donuts and e-brake turns ;)

hahaha, i know what you mean, there's this road near me that's got some NASTY twisties...but it's only one lane, and relatively sketchy...maybe some night we'll get a couple cars out there once my car is done.

i think what happened is that he rolled it over the side and into a telephone poll. it was weird because his friend was in the passenger side without a seatbelt and escaped with no injuries, whereas he wore one and now has brain damage....sad, i know, but his car was a 400$ 914 NOT tuned for the track.

I'm not dissing the 914, my car is half 914 itself, but just avoid telephone polls i guess :D

where are you from egg nog? how old are you?

As it says under my username, I'm from Vancouver, Canada. (Specifically West Vancouver in case you know the area). I'm 17 years old until January.

Here's an update from today:

Body filling (the old rust bubbles) is now almost complete
The accelerator pedal has been re-attached
Jackstand peg holes under the rocker panels have be welded back on (they were surrounded by rust before, now fixed.

I'll try to get some photos...

I just want to say from someone else who has worked on the 914 (all be it not much) being discussed I think that it really is nice and the love that Shawn has poured into the car makes everything else cease to matter. If I had the money (but as Shawn will point out, I don't) I'd want a little car like the 914 to baby to life. Kudos for the effor Shawn. Wanna let me drive it?

Egg Nog

Haha... thanks Anthony :)

Drive it? Maybe after I've taken it for a serious spin... ;)

By "spin" you mean a proper sh*t kicking around Cypress I assume hopefully with tons of smoke.

Those pictures are from almost a year ago, don't you think I've washed it since then? ;) I've ground and filled rust bubbles, cut-polished it, and it's been washed quite a few times. Keep in mind it's not even on the road yet, so there's really no reason for it anyway, apart from clearing off general shop dust.

Those pictures aren't hooked up to a live-feed webcam :)

Well All the things i wanted to say basicly have already been said. I have never actually seen one of these cars in person but its a very individual shape and with it being a 2 liter in a s little car itll be great on fuel and will pull a good skid when you strap it:) And its good to hear you got the car for a bargin like that and its good to see yourputting a real effort in the car to restore/modify it.
Most of all have fun in it.
