those aren't the Schumacher brothers.
But the right one looks like young Alonso, is he?

Yes the guy on the right is a baby Fernando Alonso. That was the easy one, as he doesn't really seem to have changed at all! :p

I must admit, the other one had me stumped when I first saw it.

I don't think that's Kimi. There is a huge hint on the leg area of his suit: "A GARCIA". I supposed there was someone with those initials that went about the the spanish racing ranks at the same time with Alonso; a google search or two later I found this guy:

I think you can catch a little more resemblance here than with Kimi...;)

Began his motor sport career on a speedway bike in 1949 before stepping up in 1953 to a Jaguar XK120, in which he won 23 of 24 starts

Previously a regional boxing champion, he once had three Formula 1 contract offers 'on the table' from BRM, Brabham and Cooper but decided to leave F1. Went on to win the British Touring Car Championship twice, the British Saloon Car Championship three times, and the European Saloon, Touring Car, Formula 5000 and Formula 2 titles

Usually seen wearing his trademark terry-towelling hat. Author of a well-known racing driver's manual. Master of one-liners and the "quotable quote". Coined the phrase 'from hero to zero'

"Late one Friday the telephone range. Hello Fank, this is Husche (von Hanstein). We would like you to drive our new car at the Nurburgring 1,000 kilometres this weekend. I said I was busy and recommended he call Brian Redman. 'Brian has had a crash, and is in hospital.' Jo Siffert was my next suggestion. 'Jo has had a crash and is in hospital.' 'What the bloody hell is going on there?' Our new car is not easy to drive Fank' - and he wasn't kidding!

"Porsche came to us because there was a shortage of drivers but the money was good so David and I decided to take it on.

"These first cars had alloy tubular chassis, which was gas-filled to detect cracks. There was a big gauge in the cockpit, which measured the gas pressure. If the gauge zeroed, they said it meant that the chassis has started to crack, and they said I should drive home 'mit care'. I told them, 'If the needle zeroes I'll park the bastard there and then and walk back, pick up my Deutschmarks and go home'.

"The chassis flexed so much that the position of the gearchange was never the same twice in a row. You'd reach out for the lever and it wasn't there anymore. I was asked to drive it at Le Mans, the money was great too, but I told them 'I never wanted to be the quickest bloke in motor racing - just the oldest - and that Porsche was going to interfere with my plans.

"David did one lap at the Nurburgring and said he was too young to die. It snowed and poured, the car was snapping sideways and aquaplaning at the same time. It was one of the few times I extended my concentration levels above and beyond what I possessed, but we finished 5th".

Well done Henk :)

With a resume of that depth you'd think his profile would be greater. But I guess focussed more for achievment & less on celebrity. I have one of his books 'Castrol Racing Drivers Manual' - great to read if you come across it, he's a very amusing man

A recent interview (transcribed from tape)

"I think, at that point it [Lola T70] was the nicest car I had driven. And I had driven a fair few cars with Ferrari, but the T70 was something special, it really was a good car, but that was a state of the Art then. I remember sitting back in an MG, you get back in these things like a little MG with wooden doors and wooden dash... and you go around a corner, and all the white ants stand up and hold hands to give it a bit of torsional rigity ... and the little gear lever is rattling.... and the Lucas windscreen wipers, and you look at it and say, well... everything rolls on so dramatically.

Well at the time, the memory, it’s like going back to your little old village and thinking well, I thought that hill was steeper. You see you can never ever get yourself a fixation, and say that was a great car, or that was a great surfboard, or stuff like that.

That was like....I think...Colin Chapman made a Lotus Sports car, a Lotus 30 sports car, and when he made a Lotus 40 sports car, it was just the same car with 10 more mistakes. You have to [understand] these things, I mean if you’ve driven over, and tested well over 100 vehicles in your time, and raced.... your job is to make that thing competitive, and you can’t shrug away the hours & hours you’ve put in, if you want to have a crack at something, you put in a 100% effort. They’re your rule books. Because if you give 10% to there family, and 10% to a business down the road, and another 5%, then suddenly you’ve got just 75% effort you can only put into your racing. It takes the full 100%. So how are you going to win with 75%? If you get the vehicle, you know you gotta give it 100, to get it all organized, and the right people, and the right things, to look at it, or don’t bother to bring it out."

Who's next?

Another funny thing .. In my book Gardner writes the 917 was so utterly diabolical to drive that after somehow managing to survive for 1000km, the team (Porsche System Engineering) wished to acknowledge their driver's bravery by awarding them the Iron Cross! :D

Yup it's Katherine Legge. Overall she didn't do too badly on her debut. 8th place and managed to finish on the lead lap at least, which is more than can be said for "ex-F1 star" Pizzonia! :p
