View Full Version : The GT4 Challenge: Round 1

SIMPLETON
07-05-2005, 09:54 AM
This will be the first Challenge for time trials in GT4. The rule are:

Each comp. starts Monday morning, ending Sunday at midnight.
The winner of the previous comp. will choose the car, track, tires, modifications of the new comp.
If the time submitted by someone is unreallistically fast it will be excluded.
You will PM your best time to me.
The one with the fastest time will be the winner.
If you have a time that you think will win, take a picture as proof. If you win you will have to present this photo as proof.
If I find out that any time is false, goes against any rules, or is done through any use of unfair play or cheatery, the user will be banned from the competition for one week and will be stripped of all their points.
Scoring goes like this:
1st place recieves 10 points. 2nd place get 8. 3rd gets 6. 4th gets 4. 5nd gets 2. Everybody else recieves 1 point. There will be a secret time that, under the rules, should be easy to obtain. This will be called the target time. If you meet the target time you will recieve an additional 1 point.

This week the challenge will be done in Arcade Mode. The track will be the Nuburgring. The car will be the Ausy Ford Falcon Race car. You can use any tire you want, although for this challenge there will be NO tuning, the only stat you can tune is the top speed. TCS/ASM is optional.

Good plan, very promising. Especially like the PM idea.

I've just made modifications to the rules. So now we all know. Also take note of of rule no.6. If you win you will have to present that that photo.

You havent even hit the target time yet, keep trying. That car is very fast. For the amount of power it has its extremely stable. You should be able to easily get sub 6:30's. If you need to get some extra practice take some of the DTM cars for a spin aroud there. They seem to be a very good stepping stone to the Falcon XR8

It's ok to use RSS tyres?
Can I play with weight/power percentages?
TC off?

6:15 with RSS tyres, stock weight/power, TC off.
The limit is somewhere near 6:10. If someone beats that, he's either a liar or Niki Lauda....

I don't really think I want to be Niki Lauda on this circuit, the Norschleife is where Lauda almost got torched to death!

I'll stick to being Stefan Bellof, or maybe Jackie Ickx! :D

Rockefella
07-05-2005, 05:07 PM
True, the brakes are good, but I have trouble getting the feel of cornering in the car. Sometimes it grips well, but once you get to the point of its max potential, it just goes into self-destruct.

whiteballz
07-05-2005, 05:23 PM
i dont think ive reached "self destruct" my first run was the best im going to get, i cant get close to it anymore, 6:30 is the best since then weird. and im not going off the track or anything...

Dino Scuderia
07-05-2005, 05:26 PM
I've discovered that the car is actually faster with the TCS off but if you put a wheel in the grass and get it spinning....you're screwed.

whiteballz
07-05-2005, 05:34 PM
im driving TCS off. its not all that bad for me when i get a wheel off, only when i put it down a gear or two, then get a driven wheel back onto tarmac, then that spins me...

Jack_Bauer
07-05-2005, 05:41 PM
I've discovered that the car is actually faster with the TCS off.

Yeah I noticed that too, I instantly knocked over 5 secs off my best time when I switched off the TC. I suppose at 1350kg it is a pretty heavy car for a racer, and the RSS tyres give it muchos traction.

It's a pretty stellar car. 600hp, ~3000lbs, great brakes. Just buy it.

If you don't have the funds, go to Special Condition Hall, run the Rally d' Capri under 'Easy,' and after you win both races (very easily I might add) you get $10,000 from that, and the Toyota Raid Rally car or whatever it's called. Sell it for $250,000. Repeat and you've got ~$500,000.

sounds pretty easy, maybe ill try it tomorrow-i had alot of money from the 1000 miles but i burnt it on...err...classics and a mercedes SL55-that car i like

honestly i'd rather use 500,000 on a Cusco Impreza or a similar JGTC lower class race car, but it sounds good, ill give it a good think through :)

You must be braking too much. Try to hit the apexes and remember, brake into the turns (in a straight line) get off the gas/brake, and then accelerate out. (Slow in => fast out)

Eff that. Brake late, put the power down early, and come out almost sideways. Make sure you tag the inside rumble strips, and the outside ones on the way out. That's how we do it in PA. Not that Dirty Jerzey stylz.

You can do it, you have a few more days. The trick to the 'ring is doing a lot of laps on it and learning everything about it, you have to think two turns ahead to go fast because this track is constantly moving.

Some turns I go in fast and brake late...others I ease the brakes on to scrub just enough speed off to make the turn. With TCS off the Falcon will try to plow through the turn pushing the front tires...just take it easy in the middle of the turn because you can make up a lot on acceleration and top speed on the fast sections. When you think you're going slow in this car, and most, that's when you're driving smooth and making a good lap.

6:19 was my outlap so there is definitely room for improvement...somewhere under 6:10 is definitely possible but i haven't got there yet... high 6:12's aint bad though...

If I play without the ghost car I do better times. It seems that I try harder when I see it, and want to pass it. But (surprise, surprise) I mess up. I know I can lower it 3 or 4 seconds
I just admire the drivers that raced the 'Ring with the F1 cars until the '70s. Does anybody know where Lauda crashed? I don't know the bends names, so it would help if somebody posted how many seconds does it take to get there:D
I know it was a left hander, though and I suspect that it's the left hander, after the 2:17 checkpoint. Is Lauda a member?

The corner Lauda crashed at doesn't have any official name but is often referred to as the "Lauda Kink" (or some sick puppies like to call it the "Grill-Kurve"! ). It usually takes me approx 2:40 to get there. I think the left hander you were referring to is Breidscheid (3rd gear, with the red & white stripy wall on the outside?). The Lauda kink is shortly after leaving there, sweeping right and then down a medium long straight, then the flat-out Lauda kink followed by the right hand hairpin of Bergwerk. It was a pretty strange corner to crash at really because it's just flat out, no bumps, no nasty cambers, pretty straight forward really. I don't know the exact details of the crash, maybe he was trying to lap a backmarker or something?

for everyone wanting to go under 6:10, lower the speed max of the car to 310 or 320 (it is allowed for this challenge), it shortens the final drive ratio and i think it may even modify the downforce...

Do you not find the car ends up hitting the limiter in 6th on some of the long straights???

I just drop it down slightly to 330kph, seems to work pretty well for me. :)

When does this competition finish by the way, tomorrow night?

Dino Scuderia
07-09-2005, 08:23 PM
Yeah, lowering below 330 is not the way to go or at least not for me, and it does not affect downforce to lower or raise the speed.

Yeah, lowering below 330 is not the way to go or at least not for me, and it does not affect downforce to lower or raise the speed.

top speed of a real life V8 Supercar is around 305kph so don't go doubting my theory too much if these cars were designed to be as close to the real life models as possible... the downforce may not be affected but the change in gear ratio makes it much quicker when you set it to 320...

Do you not find the car ends up hitting the limiter in 6th on some of the long straights???

nope i hit the limiter at the end of the very long straight but only for a brief moment and that was it, so it would have done little too effect my time...
