EXCLUSIVE: JENSON TO JOIN FERRARI
Button £20M deal to replace Rubens
By Oliver Holt, Chief Sports writer
BRITISH Formula One ace Jenson Button is being lined up for a sensational £20million move to Ferrari next season.

The BAR driver has been sounded out about signing a two-year deal to replace Rubens Barrichello at the end of the year.
And he has been told he could take over as the team's number one when Michael Schumacher retires.
Button (right) goes into tomorrow's British Grand Prix at Silverstone with five points after a difficult start to the season.
But Ferrari's move for the British star is part of a masterplan to scupper the threat of a breakaway series led by the sport's engine giants.
It is thought to have the enthusiastic backing of F1 bosses who see the prospect of Button at the wheel of a Ferrari as a massive boost to the sport's marketability.
They know it would destroy any hopes a rival series might have of persuading the powerful English-speaking media to back its version of grand prix racing.
Ferrari have already committed themselves to turning their back on the breakaway series.
And they feel now is the perfect time to strike because Button's plans are so unclear.
Both BAR and Williams are thought to have options on his services, triggered by various clauses, but Button is no longer eager to join either of them.
Williams were favourites to sign him because he had made it clear he would have liked to race for them this season.
But Williams' competitiveness next year was thrown into doubt when their engine supplier BMW bought Sauber last month.
And F1 impresario Bernie Ecclestone believes that a move to the Italian team would be the turning point in his career.
"Button needs to be in a team that can get behind him," said Ecclestone, "then he would be in a position to deliver.
"People want to believe it when others say nice things about them and he was in danger of believing he was better than he was.
"But recently he has been shaken and perhaps a little bit stirred into pulling his socks up.
"He needs the kind of discipline he would get at Ferrari.
"Michael Schumacher is wholly dedicated seven days a week. He will win a race by five laps and the next day he will test.
"If Jenson was at Ferrari, he would have to do that whether he liked it or not. It would be good for him."

Source ??

Who is this guy.

The article is so full of ifs and woud-haves that it's clearly speculation and typical of what happens every year by hacks ( big and small ) the world over :(

Conjecture on that scale is hardly "exclusive" :)

Here are Jensons comments from the interview:

Q: Now the Daily Mirror today says that you’re joining Ferrari next year. What comment do you have on that?
JB: Yeah, I read that this morning as well. A nice piece! I can’t say anything on my future next year, I’m just living in the moment which is pretty good.
Q: But you won’t deny it.
JB: I won’t, but I cannot talk about my future next year. That’s it. I am not going to say yes or no.

Button likes to play around with it because he gets some press mileage.

Apparently this story first popped up in a magazine called the Red Bulletin, which is apparently strictly only available in the F1. I think it came out on Thursday so the Mirror hack has obviously picked up a copy and decided to splash it all over the back pages of said tabloid.

When pressed about his future last weekend Button said something like, "It'll all be sorted out in the next couple of months," which is the nearest he's ever come to admitting that the contract clause that lets him go to Williams will be activated on August 31st. He normally just goes all coy about it and says "I can't comment about my future." It'll be interesting to see whether there is this rumoured clause in the Williams contract about having a manufacturer engine deal that could maybe give JB a chance to wriggle out of the move. At the moment, if it were a straight choice between the two teams I think it would be a no-brainer to stay with BAR-Honda, as Williams are in a right old mess at the moment! :(

I like JB, a lot, in fact he is probably my favorite F1 driver at the current time. I would like to see him get som success, if its at Ferrari, I don't know, I suppose I would still root for him. I like the BAR team though. I think they could be back in it in another year. So who knows where he will end up, but I think he could end up in Italy.

If he mentions enough teams he's sure to get it right eventually.

yep, Bernie knows that Ferrari are like Man Utd.

A HUGE world-wide pull to the sport.
NO other team has the same level of international support (yet:))

Si he has to continually work to keep their profile up and to throw ALL those fans somethign to dream about for next season given the risk of losing them now over the current performance :)

Comments like Button moving to Ferrari start of a chain reaction, not only do the Ferrari fans want to get into it, but all the Button, BAR and Williams fans as well
