Eminem's Early Retirement?

07/15/2005 7:52 PM, E! Online
Charlie Amter

Has Eminem run out of encores?

The rapper is apparently ready to hang up his mike, at least according to a report Friday in his hometown newpaper, the Detroit Free Press.

Citing sources close to the platinum-selling hip-hop star, the Free Press says the real Slim Shady will play his last concert in Dublin on Sept. 17.

The report also speculates that the rapper's most recent release, Encore, will be his swan song, as he focuses on producing other rap artists.

Paul Rosenberg, Eminem's longtime manager, told the Press no final decision has been made regarding Em's future plans. However, Rosenberg did say that Encore, which topped the charts when released in November, was "certainly the cap on this part of his career." The rapper, known for his arch sense of humor, is pictured giving a final bow on the cover of the album and closes out the set with the track "Curtains Down."

If indeed Encore is his last official offering as Eminem, the 33-year-old, born Marshall Mathers III, will go out as the best-selling hip-hop artist of all time. His four solo studio albums--1999's The Slim Shady LP, 2000's The Marshall Mathers LP, 2002's The Eminem Show and Encore--have moved more than 25 million copies in the U.S. alone; he has generated sales of more than $1 billion worth of records.

He's also won nine Grammys to go along with Best Song Oscar for the 8 Mile track "Lose Yourself."

Eminem has already established himself as a deft A&R man and producer, guiding the debut release of mega-selling Shady Records artist 50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Em also produced two offerings from his Detroit rap crew D-12.

As with his other artists, Em will likely make a cameo on new protege Stat Quo's debut offering, Statlanta, due early next year on Shady/Aftermath. (Quo, who has been touring on Eminem and 50 Cent's Anger Management 3 trek, was hospitalized Wednesday after a tour bus crashed en route to a Denver concert. He is said to be recovering nicely and will likely rejoin the tour Sunday outside Seattle.

Of course, even if Eminem says he's giving up the spotlight, it might be easier said than done. He need look no further than Jay-Z, who announced his retirement from the rap game late last year and has already guested on one album and performed at the Live 8 concert earlier this month.

Hmmm....he had a few good ones. I forgot what it was called, but the song that used the chorus of "Dream On" (Aerosmith) was actually quite good, and his other songs that were like that. Then again, he also had alot of the violent "HEY I HAVE A LARGE EGO!" type crap. But as one of the few rappers who could make a song like the Dream On one, I will miss him.....I hate how so few rappers can get off the fact that they used to be poor and are now rich with big fancy houses, and how they are fancy, and why they are fancy, along with their shoes. Or how most rappers just rap about how they have such a big ego that if someone took a tiny shot at their ego, the only way to deal with the guy was to kill them brutally even though it is for almost no apparent reason.

He knows the value of a worthwhile backing track and to not overpower it, a good rapper is a percussion track over a tune. That's the real art, not crapping on about who-cares-what over some lame excuse for a beat.

He was a phenomenon thats for sure. Hes been at the top for over a decade now, and not a lot of todays/90s rappers can say that. He has a LOT of songs that i love (like 30 or 40) and not a lot of people can say that.

I can understand your point of view also since now all that rap is about is ass, guns, ass, money, ass guns, ass, and violence. But eminem is different, he hasnt worn gold on 1 song, he raps about people, he raps about hard ship, but i do disagree with his last song, ass like that i dislike that song.

If this is true I'm going to miss his music. He has always had good humor about almost everything even when all these parents groups were trying to bring him down. I agree f**k the parents groups even if they did stop him there would be other rappers trying to be just like him. He was the one and only great white rapper, Paul Wall can go suck a d**k.

ill admit, a few of his songs i thought were quite well-done...not at all like the normal crap that other rappers go on about...

but it seems to me that he's lost his motivation...i mean he isnt as misunderstood as he once was, hes become quite accepted by mainstream culture...imo he just doesnt sound as angry in his last album as he did before...so i guess that for him, no anger=no motivation

i was listening to his song soldier(which conicidentally was the name of the music album i had to make for english class), and i just noticed it, he tells us he will do it, or that hes fire is running out, here

I'm a soldier, i'm a soldier, i'm a soldier, i'm a soldier...

Yo', never was a thug, just infatuated with guns,
never was a gangsta, 'til I graduated to one,
and got the rep of a villain, for weapon concealin',
took the image of a thug, kept shit appealin',
willin' to stick out my neck, for respect if it meant life or death,
never live to regret what I said,
when you're me, people just want to see,
if it's true, if it's you, what you say in your rap's, what you do,
so they feel, as part of your obligation to fulfill,
when they see you on the streets, face to face, are you for real,
in confrontation ain't no conversation, if you feel you're in violation,
any hesitation'll get you killed, if you feel it, kill it,
if you conceal it, reveal it, being reasonable will leave you full of bullets,
pull it, squeeze it, till it's empty, tempt me, push me, pussies,
I need a good reason to give this trigger a good squeeze...

[Chorus:]
I'm a soldier, these shoulder's hold up so much, they won't budge,
i'll never fall or fold up,
i'm a soldier,
even if my collar bone's crush or crumble,
I will never slip or stumble,
i'm a soldier,
these shoulder's hold up so much, they won't budge,
i'll never fall or fold up,
i'm a soldier,
even if my collar bone's crush or crumble,
I will never stumble...

I love pissin' you off, it get's me off,
like my lawyer's, when the ****in' judge let's me off,
all you mother****ers gotta do is set me off,
i'll violate and all the mother****in' bet's be off,
i'm a lit fuse, anything I do bitche, it's news,
pistol whippin' mother****in' bouncers, six-two,
who needs bullets, soon as I pull it, you sweat bullets,
an excellent method to get rid of the next bully,
it's actually better cause instead you murderin',
you can hurt em' and come back again and kick dirt at 'em,
it's like pourin' salt in the wounds, assault and get sued,
you can smell the lawsuits soon as I waltz in the room,
everybody halts and stops, calls the cops,
all you see is bitches comin' out their halter tops,
runnin' and duckin' out the Hard Rocks parking lot,
you'll all get shot whether its your fault or not, cause...

[Chorus]

I spit it slow so these kids know that i'm talkin' to 'em,
give it back to these damn critics and sock it to em,
i'm like a thug, with a little bit of Pac influence,
I spew it, and look how I got you bitches rockin' to it,
you mother****ers could never do it like I could do it,
don't even try it, you'll look stupid, do not pursue it,
don't ever in your life, try to knock the truest,
I spit the illest shit, ever been dropped to two inch,
so ticky-tock listen as the sound ticks on the clock,
listen to the sound of Kim as she licks on a cock,
listen to the sound of me spillin' my heart through this pen,
mother****ers know that i'll never be Marshall again,
full of controversy until I retire my jersey,
'til the fire inside dies and expires at thirty, and
Lord have mercy on any more of these rappers that verse me,
and put a curse on authorities in the face of adversity, i'm a...[Chorus]

Yo' left, yo' left, yo' left,
right, left,
yo' left, yo' left, yo' left,
right, left,
yo' left, yo' left, yo' left,
right, left,
yo' left, yo' left, yo' left,
right, left...

to be honest, im glad, get rid of eminem, in fact all rappers because im my honest opinion rap isn't exactly the greatest form of music, i loathe it. I would rate it down below with all the urban crap i have to hear at work. But, i do admire his hard work and the challenges he's faced, and he did a solid performance in 8mile.

Im a rock person myself, through and through. I know that in the end, rock will always outlast all other forms of music, save opera and such, but when rap and urban (hip hop, r n' b) will die, rock bands will still be there belting away to massive crouds.

Any1 watch rockstar INXS? I liked what Dave "weird" Navarro noted when a clip of the MASSIVE crowd at wembley stadium was showed. He noted that, that is the difference between pop and rock. Never will rap or urban reach the climatic live hieghts of rock, because, cmon admit it, damn urban boys can't sign live to save thier life :D

roflmfao. Hey man, as soon as the beatles and elvis were born, rock was cemented into history as being the immortal genre of music. Why? because even today, millions of Elvis, Beatles and old school rock band albums are still being sold. Why? because they were made so long ago, and they sound so damn good that new generations cannot ignore the sounds of smashing drums and guitar rifts. It is the one genre of music that will be immortal. THere will always be a group of teenagers somewhere having a session (not the drug sort :D) in thier garage or whatever. Rappers however. Jeez, all sounds the god damn same to be honest. MTV did the, what was it? 100 or top 1000 songs of all time. How many urban / rap beats made the cut? not many at all. Which was number one? a rock song. Like a rolling stone. *cough*, but still the sheer amount of rock artists in there is another reason why it will always be with us.

Another genre popping up? i doubt it man. We had rock / rap with limp bizkit - dead. I guess techno will always be around as well, ppl will always go nightclubbing, but hey, they remix rock songs :D.

Face it man, rap is a dying genre of music, the artists themselves i dis-respect because of thier extrovange in lifestyle and hipocritcial behavious when talking about fundraising and stuff. Seriously, who the f*** would drive around in an suv with 20' rims. Thats just sad.

You can't put an entire genre of music down just because you personally hate it. Im sure he will live off the royalties of his Eminem designer clothing which always struck me as the height of hypocracy seeing he appeared to take a cynical swipe at (everything) including that kind of exploitation of music. One of his best quotes was when he refused Weird Al the right to make a film clip covering one of his song because it was "too important". Such delightful self deprication. I cant name too many rap songs I like (mainly cause Im old) but I can accept any style of music has relevance to others. I suppose I disliked Eminem in particular for his bad spirited lyrics, pretentiousness, lack of vocal ability and hypocracy (Eminem wear).
I will concede that some of his music will find a place in history within the realms of rap music for what its worth.

Tragic what will all the Civics (aside from Niko) be thumping to now, or will Eminem be considered retro next year?

I despise rap music, most of it seems to have the anger, but without the political, social or personal insight of punk. It has always seemed pretentious in that (almost) all rappers have this badass image from growing up on the street and having to fight for everything they have or achieved, I don't buy into it.

People who dislike something, and give a reason for their opinion, hardly fall into the "lack of intelligence" category.
I believe you only address people who say something sucks and have no basis for their opinion.

I, and several others explained why we don't care for rap music, it is our opinion and you should accept it or give an argument as to why we are wrong.
