Before any car is proposed:

Define Classic: Landmark car , or car I (want to) own ?

I guess the easiest way to answer is this:

Classic car: Any car you'd like to see in your garage from any timeline, except the modern era (pre 1980s I'd say). Even if it's post 1980. Who am I to say what contitutes a classic anyhow?

The 1 million dollar question. Is a beetle a classic? Will a Trabant ever be a classic and before you start laughing, yes there was actually one participating in the classic run on Silverstone this weekend. There are many landmark cars I don't want to own, and probably there are many cars I want to own which are not considered landmark cars, but I still would settle for them.... (let's say a Ferrari Mondial)

Sei cilindri

That's right Henk , a beetle is definitly a classic, I do not think they can be much discussion about that but its not a car I would like to own

A trabant is also a classic but one I could see myself driving in, as a matter of fact I seriously considered buying a estate a few years ago but in the end I bought a VW rear engined van because it was more practical for the same bucks

As for -cars I like to own- classics: The longing is mostly better than actually having to live with !

(so why do I torture myself so much than ?)

Before any car is proposed:

Define Classic: Landmark car , or car I (want to) own ?

Classic is a term tossed around a lot. At one time the Classic Car Club of America had defined it as "Selected models made between 1925-1948." I believe most people except the idea of a Classic Era, but the term classic is attached to just about anycar that gets a following. There are some who call a Yugo or an AMC Pacer a classic. Perosnally, I like the idea of a classic being what you love. This is even if people consider what you love a classic pile of junk.

These days I think classics are broken into groups. The term classic is to general. What are your favorite classic sports cars pre-1970 or favorite classic luxury cars pre-1955 would be a better way to go.

:) I was hoping you in particular would check it out, some fantastic pics in that site which thankfully is free access, unlike many

Pity some pic-links n/w. I can remember seeing many of those cars:
1st page the Maybach a 'homebuilt' which used a WW2 Maybach Staff Car engine, won the AGP! Driver Stan Jones (Alan's Father) and mechanic Charlie Dean of Repco fame. Btw as a kid I was lucky enough to meet through family-social boyhood heroes Phil Irving & Laurie Hartnett. Also '60s racer Peter Manton, and Irving's Repco-Brabham associate Frank Hallam who lived nearby & sometimes brought home wild Repco test/project cars which deafened the neighbourhood .. ah memories

Love the charismatic & spectacular pic of those two wheel-lifting Cortinas (Lotus or GT500?) which imho exempifies what is missing in current tintop racing. And isn't that pre-WW1 Ballot a beast - think I even saw/heard it run at the old Templestowe hillclimb

Anyway, cheers & forgive my nostalgic muse :)

Too many to choose! Can I have a top 50? :D

Quite a few people picking the gull wing Mercedes 300SL. Saw one of those in town a couple of weeks ago. He stopped at a zebra crossing to let me go. Beautiful, beautiful car! I'd almost forgotten about them but I nearly stopped on the crossing it was so stunning!

I'm pretty sure it was the real deal. Everything looked right, and I don't mean the right shape - I mean the right age. Even the driver (50-something, brown leather driving gloves, etc.) Wouldn't surprise me anyway - I live in an area where there are a lot of English Premier League footballers and rock stars - a lot of money (not in my pocket, sadly ... ;))
