What do you guys class as a bench press? Are you just counting one-rep powerlifting style bounce-off-the-chest type lifts or do you mean being able to do a full set of 8-10 with no spot?

I don't bother with just trying one-rep lifts cos frankly it's a waste of time and you'll probably be doing yourself more harm than good. I can usually do three sets of 8-10 reps lifting 100kgs (I don't speak in your strange archaic measurements :p ) and I weigh about 72kgs.

My gym teacher made a bet with a kid about how much (the teacher) can bench. The teacher ended up lifting 450 lbs.. :p And won the bet. He looks like a military drill sergeant.

I work out 5 days a week, two hours a day. :)

That makes two of us Rock, 6 days actually :) M-W-F I work biceps, triceps and chest. T-Thurs-Sat, back, shoulders and legs.

I weigh 70 kilos and bench 80 kilos, 4 sets at 10 reps. As a general rule, once I can do 4 sets of 12 fairly easily I raise the weight just enough so I can only do 4 sets of 8 and work my way up to 12 again.

Well the people who know their bench press are going to be above average. the average person doesnt even workout. atleast here in the states. So its understandable that the people replying to the thread are above average. by the way, what is average for bench press?

It's interesting how people equate how much you bench to how strong over all you are. True, by benching heavy weight means you have strong chest and arm muscles. But a real test of strength is how many series and reps you can do...muscle endurance.

I've seen guys brag they can bench 200+ lbs but can only do 2 to 6 reps, not bad but if you look at the guy that benched 120 lbs and did 12 reps...who lifted more weight in the end? Besides, the more reps you do, the better definition you'll have. :)

Haha^

I don't think 320, or even 350 is a professional athlete? It was pretty common in my college. Me and all of my friends played football, and we had morning workouts everyday, and a group of us would do afternoon sometimes for whatever we didn't do in the morning. Those workouts went through all of high school, and most of us would do therm in the summer too, so it just slowly progressed. I only benched 180ish freshmen year.

Stay on topic guys.

I don't know how much I can bench, it's been ages since I go to the gym. I do jog 3 miles almost everyday and do kayaking every weekend though.

BTW... Do you guys do it the right way (see pic 1) or the fancy gym kind of way (see pic 2), because even if you might be putting the same weight on it, the assisted way takes a lot less skill and requires less strength as you don't have to worry about nothing else but to push up (plus the stick basically doesn't weight anything)

Widsinator

I always have done it the way in the first picture, because it is the real weight, and it works multiple muscles in your arm as apposed to one. The second way is for people like the one shown in the picture.

Rockefella
07-31-2005, 12:53 AM
I was referring to the free-weight version of the Bench-press, like in the first picture. Sometimes, me and my friend use the bench-machine (it's not a full machine but takes away some freedom of movement) to do incline, decline, and normal bench.

My workout goes as follows:

Monday - Chest: Bench, Incline Bench, Decline Bench, Fly's. All 4-5 sets, with 6-12 repetitions.

Tuesday - Back: Lat pulldowns, Hyperextensions, T-Bar Rows, Seated rows. 4-5 sets, with 8-12 repetitions.

Wednesday - Shoulders: Shoulder press, Military press, Shrugs, Forward raises, and side-raises. 4-5 sets, 6-12 repetitions. (each arm)

Thursday - Biceps: Barbell curls, preacher curls, Incline dumbell curls, hammer curls. 4-5 sets, 8-12 repetitions. (each arm)

Friday - Triceps: Tricep pushdowns, Reverse-grip pulldowns, Dips, Tricep extensions. 4-5 sets, 8-12 repetitions.

Saturday or Sunday - Legs: Squats, standing leg extensions, seated leg extensions, leg-press, hamstring curls, and calf extensions. 3-5 sets, 8-15 repetitions. (each leg)

Monday/Wednesday/Friday - Abs: Ball crunches, leg-lifts, side-bends, medicine ball, sit-ups. 3-4 sets, 10-20 repetitions.

Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday or Sunday - Cardio: Mile run in under 10 minutes, then finish off with a half hour of racquetball.

At the end of each day we usually sit in the sauna for 5 minutes to relax.

I do it the right way as you say Niko, in the "Fancy Gym" way, your muscles don't get the negative on the way down. I also like to press using dumbells, you get the same benefit as doing the bench press with the single bar with the advantage that if one of your arms suddenly fatuiges, you can drop the dumbells to the sides instaid of having the single bar drop on your chest.

I also "run" 20 to 30 minutes on the tread mill BTW.

Sounds dumb, but a paper route can really develop your upper body. Before I started mine, I looked like a soccer player. Now, after 3 years of hauling huge bags of papers, I got the physique of a rugby player.

I can pull about 20kg of papers for 1.5 hours on a Saturday, and 30kg of papers for 2 hours on a Sunday. Easily can do more, but I don't feel the need to exert myself ;)

Creatine doesn't make you stronger, it's used to put water back into your muscles after a workout, to help recover and to help the muscles expand. You take it if you want to look bigger, quicker.

its creatine and all it does is takes water and makes muscle absorb water. Thats all.

If you cycle it properly and are very strict with you diet and water intake while taking it it can really make a huge difference is both size and stregth. I've cycled it twice now and both were great experiences. During my first cycle I put on 15 pounds, and added 20 pounds to my bench. Also, contrary to popular belief, after a period of weaning myself off creatine (every second day for about a week and a half) i lost no size nor strength, and continued to gain. It was a real shot in the arm (excuse the pun) for my workouts, and really pushed me to where I am today.

Pro athletes are people who train hard. I'm a person who trains hard. I'm an athletic type, just not pro material (by a longshot  ). Anything is possible if your determined enough. And if you must have a pic, I'll proabably be hitting a beach tommorow so I can probably get one then. Though I do feel odd posting a shot like that on the net. I'm not really that extroverted by nature.

Reading only takes you so far. I don't really want to start a big internet fight over this, but I've been working out for 5 years. I know what's what. Creatine helped me gain size and strength. That's what happened in real life, not in some article. I don't know how you can say you can't cycle...take it for about 8 weeks, lay off for a good 6 months, then do it again, all the while taking a very low-carb protein supplement. I really don't have any reason to lie, just trying to help out those who may be misinformed, or too scared to give something different a try.

On the subject of different things, never be scared to try a really different program. I was a firm believer that only a 1 body part per day split could work. However for the past 6 weeks I've been on a upper body/lower body split, doing upper twice a week and lower twice a week. It really helped me overcome a plateau I was on.
