Just happened a little less than an hour ago in Toronto, Canada.

TORONTO -- Black smoke is billowing from a passenger jet that skidded off a runway at Pearson Airport in Toronto.

Police an Air France Airbus 340 was trying to land when it ran into trouble and burst into flames.

The plane crashed into a ravine after apparently running off the end of the runway. It was carrying about 200 people, reported CTV.

Rescue vehicles have been rushing to the scene.

The wreckage is in a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada's busiest highway.

A regional police spokesman said the crew and passengers were evacuating the plane.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

The area has been experiencing stormy weather today, according to reports. There was a storm -- with lightning -- in the area at the time of the crash.

It's sad to see another plane go down, hopefully the people on the plane are allright, or at least not severely injured/dead.

Yeah. Sad. This really isn't Air France's first time either so they're in for a bit share of the trouble whether it was their fault or not.

I'm not. Last time something like this happened US took an hour or so to hold a meeting.
Don't shift blame.

Ok, this crash happened at 4:15'ish p.m. U.S. Eastern Time. The news conference was held at 5:30 p.m. So I suppose the US is fast.

I'm watching CNN as I write this, they have talked to two survivors and are reeporting two busloads of survivors have been taken to a local hospital. No word as to how many have died if any.

They're saying the possible cuases could be wind sheer (spelling?) and lightning.

Not only do I feel terrible for the people on the plane, but their family and friends. I hope none of our Canadian UCP members had loved ones on the plane or where on the plane. Let us know guys.

Late braking: Unconfirmed: No casualties, lets hope they're right.

It seems to be turning out pretty well. Everyone on the plane has been evacuated according to CNN, and most of the people seem to be in descent condition, but some are worse off than others.

Yeah, last word seems to be that there were only minor injuries, a few trips to the hospital, and a witness says they saw the plane get struck by lightning.

But some are worse off than others.
I suppose we can only hope and pray.

BTW, has anybody noticed that there have been quite a lot of disaster in the world lately?
Just recently there was that MAJOR flood in Bombay. And before that somewhere else. While that was going on there was a tornado in North West Asia. And then there was those storms in the US. And so on.....

Strange Phenomena, anyone?

what is wind shear?

In laymans terms, wind shear is a very strong vertical burst of wind that can cuase a plane to go off course.

According to CNN and a helpful French passenger who's been interviewed for the past 15 minutes: 297 passengers + 12 crew members = 309 total, only 12 minor injuries - sent to hospital. No known fatalities

Yeah, it seems as if there was a 5 minute window after they crashed where there was little smoke and no fire. Apparently, the fireballs/smoke came after everyone was evacuated.
