This car had Suicide doors way before the RX-8.

It's just owners actually took the name seriously :p

From the 2001 SEMA show. Everyone remembers this car, right?

With its turbocharged engine and sizzling yellow-to-red paint scheme, the Saturn SCX 3-door coupe is a sure bet to ignite the passion of performance-car enthusiasts.

The SCX’s 1.9-liter dohc 4-cylinder engine was modified by Saturn Motorsports of San Diego to yield an estimated 300 horsepower--more than double the engine’s normal output in the Saturn SC2. Along with its hot engine, the SCX boasts handling and sporty appearance cues that reflect the car’s performance capabilities.

“The Saturn 3-door coupe has been growing in popularity among young buyers who want to personalize their vehicles,” said Steve Girard, total vehicle planner for the Saturn S-series. “The Saturn SCX concept car demonstrates … that you can do a lot with the coupe’s powertrain and vehicle chassis.”

To double the output of the 1.9-liter engine, Saturn Motorsports rebuilt it using custom-made JE Pistons (www.jepistons.com), Crower connecting rods (www.crower.com), a JG Engine Dynamics turbo cylinder head and a JC Sports big-bore throttle body. An Electro-Motive ignition and fuel injection controller (www.electromotive-inc.com) takes care of the timing and makes sure the motor gets enough go-juice. And to handle the additional power output, the stock clutch has been swapped for a Centerforce dual friction package (www.centerforce.com).

The SCX's engine was tuned by special vehicles builder MSX International. The company also built a custom header and custom stainless steel exhaust system for the car. It uses a B&B stainless steel muffler (www.bbexhaust.com) and a Mozart 4.5-inch stainless steel exhaust tip (www.konigwheels.com) to further enhance both performance and looks.

On a cooler note, Jet-Hot high-temperature metallic ceramic coating (www.jet-hot.com) reduces the extreme temperatures within the header and turbo housing. And a hood-mounted dual air induction system helps with additional engine cooling and adds to the overall appearance of the vehicle.

The car’s dramatic paint scheme begins at the front with bright yellow--a color featured on a run of limited-edition Saturn coupes--and transitions to red, one of the most popular 3-door coupe colors. The paint job owes its brilliance to an application of a crushed-glass topcoat that reflects light.

To match the hot paint scheme, the SCX sports a set of BFGoodrich Scorcher T/A high-performance tires (www.bfgoodrichtires.com). These 225/40ZR-18 tires feature full-tread-depth color bands that are yellow on the front tires and red on the rear. They're wrapped around 18x7-inch Superleggera alloy wheels from O.Z. Racing (www.ozwheels.com).

The SCX is further set apart from run-of-the-mill Saturns via a set of tough-looking ground effects designed by MSX. The kit includes front and rear fascias and rocker moldings. Other sporty touches include a rear spoiler with a dual-wing look and a carbon fiber roof rail.

The yellow-to-red color theme is picked up inside the SCX, too. The front seats are yellow with red accents, while the rear is red with yellow accents. The door panels also feature inserts that go from yellow to red. To add to the overall sporty looks, the Saturn received a MOMO steering wheel with carbon fiber accents and a MOMO shift knob and pedals (www.momo.it). Plus, a custom gauge pod by NR Automobile Accessories (www.nrauto.com) holds auxiliary gauges to keep tabs on both oil pressure and air/fuel ratio.

No self-respecting sports coupe would hit the road without killer tunes, and the SCX isn't lacking in this respect, either. It boasts a Kenwood DVD/CD/TV entertainment and audio system, with a motorized screen that retracts into the head unit and offers touch-screen controls. Both DVDs and CDs sound better in the Saturn, thanks to a 400-watt Alpine amplifier and four Alpine speakers with built-in midrange and tweeters (www.alpine1.com).

Finally, the SCX’s handling has been enhanced with a front and rear adjustable coil-over-shock suspension system and a set of sway bars from The Progress Group. Plus, Stainless Steel Brakes' 13-inch disc brake rotors and 4-piston calipers up front and 12-inch rotors with 2-piston calipers in the rear (www.ssbrakes.com) help bring this powerful coupe to a stop.

The winglets under the main wing are a neat touch.
