dammit! you stole my gig. I'd been spending the last 2 days trudging my way through the DCX site (which is horribly and annoyingly slow) gathering these pictures! :)

Awesome. I've been looking for the one of SL's through the ages for a long time. I think the worst of the bunch is the 70's one.

Apologies to note that this is, in fact, a CL. It was now as the S-Class coupé, but it's not an SL.

SMXI & Matt thanks alot for the pictures, I think this was agreat SL.

It's a pitty most pictures are from after it's midlife 'facelift'... I liked the lines of the original much more they were much cleaner.

Notably the fromt bumpers and the 'air inlets' on the side have been mutulated. I believe pictures 3 & 4 of the first two posts are of the original model of 1990.
Perhaps Mercedes itself is the same opinion as in the overview pictures of all SL types (with the current model) they also choose to display the model before it's facelift.

I'm with you on that. That's the problem with Mercedes design: it's getting more complex everyday. This SL, on it's original version, was one of the prettiest and more classy cars Mercedes as ever made.

Welcome BTW. Do you have a GT Turbo?

I used to have one, 7 years ago. Great car, when it was working... Don't have spare money for a 'toy' car now. When I have we will probably buy one again or even an older 5 Turbo.

I know what you mean. A friend of mine bought an early one and we have been working on it for quite a while and it is still not running properly. It looks as if the turbo is toasted, which means more money will have to be spent before it runs. The biggest problem is Renault's pathetic service department, which seems eager to get all old cars off the road by not supplying them with parts. Hopefully we can get some more work done in the coming months: I won't be out of the country as much and he has finally got himself a small garage to work in.

I love those cars and had some fast ride's on racing ones. I love them. I love the 5 Alpine Turbo too. Nice taste. ;)

The R 129 denotes the internal factory code for this generation of SL. It's still just SL.
