WASHINGTON - Mazda Motor Corp. said Monday it had halted the sale and production of the 2006 Mazda5 crossover because a potential heat buildup in the exhaust system could lead to a fire.

The government, meanwhile, said it was investigating reports that the large sun roof on the Cadillac SRX has shattered while driving at highway speeds, showering passengers with glass.

Mazda said it recalled about 2,000 of the Mazda5s that had already been sold and told dealers not to sell another 700 still on dealership lots. The Mazda5, which seats six but is smaller than a typical minivan, first became available in the United States during the summer.

Production of the vehicle, expected at 10,000 to 15,000 in North America, has been suspended while the company investigates the incidents, the automaker said.

"Safety is our No. 1 priority so we've gotten all the customers into loaner vehicles so they're not without a car for the duration," said Mazda spokeswoman Tamara Mlynarczyk.

The recall is based on three reports of fires, which the automaker said appeared to start around the left rear bumper. Mlynarczyk said the automaker is trying to quickly understand the cause of the problem.

Mazda said owners were told it may take about a month to fix the problem. The potential defect is not believed to affect vehicles in Japan and Europe, Mlynarczyk said.

Oh Dear. At least they got to it quickly, it's better than a previous Ford Rear-end Problem.

And before anyone jumps on me, Mazda is Owned by Ford.

They've done the right thing, but the better thing would have been to have a sorted product BEFORE it went on sale.

That's too bad. I was highly anticipating the creation of a true mini-van market to emerge in the States. :(

Well I am glad they caught the problem so quick. I hope they can fix just as quick. Ford man, this is what, their 4th or 5th recall in the last year? I suppose we could count this one not against Ford, but it is a Ford owned company.

Anyone know if the Mazda5 shares a platform or rear end parts with an Fords?

yeah, it's better than when Ford pussyfooted around with the reports of the fires in the Focus, caused by a faulty fuel line.

Please don't ever talk again. I don't know how many times you've bitched about the Focus fires that are either so rare it's 1 in a 1,000,000 cars, and not even related to the car (as in in a crash another car collides and both start on fire), or they are fabrications of hate sites. I can't stand to see you whine about it constantly. I would be in joy if I never saw you post again.

Got to stop being a dickhead, Prius. Because only a handful of Focus had supposedly spontaneously combusted doesn't mean a recall of every car is in order. An investigation, yes, but definitely not a full scale recall. Seeing as you jumped the gun on the Focus' car fires, I'm surprised you haven't gotten on Saturns case, as not only has one of our members here just had his blow up, but the Saturns actually have a credited case against them, not just a very small handful of people claim that Ford is the spawn of Satan.

I'm sorry, but you've gone beyond the limit. You are officially on ignore. :)

Besides the fact that two are clearly in parking lots.

But even beyond that fact, cars get car fires, and 99% of the time it's not due to something the manufacturer did wrong. I've seen about 2 XJS' that had car fires, but does that mean that every single Jaguar ever built is thereby defective and must be removed from society?

It's a cool little vehicle, they'll get it sorted soon...until then maybe they should call it the Mazda 5 Alarm....
